Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday Februaiy 27, 1991 Commissioners handle full agenda Rick Meyer, newly apcounty environ- pointed mental health specialist, met with county commissioners for the first time at the February 19 commission meeting. He expressed a willingness to help throughout the county, but said he has no jurisdiction on Indian lands, except by invi- tation from the tribe. Problems which have already surfaced, Meyer said, are the Frontier Theater building in Blanding, and the Westwater Indian settlement, which has no sanitation facilities, water, or electricity. Rosalie Goldman of Bluff reported to the commission on the progress of the Bluff which will be housed in the historic jail. The renovation of the interior is beginning, including plumbing, electrical, heating, and the removal of Library, interior partitions. Gold- man said she expects the library to be open sometime in May. She also told commission- ers that many people are volunteering to help, and donating money for the renovation. Local residents, as well as people from all over the country, are donating books, labor, and building materials. She thanked the county for the funds given to the project. The library will not be part of the county library system, but is set up as a separate library. Rick Bailey, commissioner aide, told the commission that approximately $11,000 set aside several years ago for an in depth study of econ' ic potential a the reserand problem. vation finally will be put to use. The money has been held in trust with the Association of Local Governments (AOG) which has assigned the project to Indian Affiliates, Inc. The AOG is seeking matching funds to begin the process of expanding the economy on the reservation. Albert Mark and George Etsitty of UNDO met with the commission to evaluate last years Utah Navajo Fair. A permanent site for the fair is still being sought. UNDC, who sponsors the fair, is looking at possible sites with economical access to electricity, water, and roads Two private contractors challenged the commission on the bidding procedures on county road projects. The two smd that the county has not bid a road job in three years. They contend that most counties do not have construction crews, and others that have had construction crews in the past are phasing them out. Commissioners said that the county has not been doing much road work because of the scarcity of water, but that when water is available, there will be four projects up for bid in the county: Harts Draw Road, and three smaller projects along the Perkins road. These roads will be on bids through the Transportation District, not the commis- sion. com- missioners approved a new electric meter for the Montezuma Creek Fire Station; approved the annual Southeastern Utah Development District resolution; and approved the purchase of office furniture for the Justice Court. by Doris Valle Approximately 150 San Juan County residents about 50 adults and dren - combat 100 chil- are enrolled Evenstart, -- a program in to family illiteracy.
