SCS photo Rancher pioneers irrigation pipeline just cant stand to see my water running to I said Heidi Redd as she walked through the door waste, at the Soil Conservation Service office in Monticello about a year ago. The stress on her face was put there by the past years of drought a common expression these days on the faces of farmers - and ranchers. Historically, water flowing in North Cottonwood Canyon had been diverted and used for irrigation by Catthe Scorup-Somervill- e tle Company, and by earlier More recently, settlers. Heidi, as owner of Indian Creek Ranch, has used the water for irrigation. The efficiency of the old irrigation system was very poor. In dry years, earth ditches soaked up most of the available small stream flows, leaving inadequate water for irrigating the fields. Because this water was running to waste dur- ing the drought of 1988, 89, and 90, and alfalfa and pasture fields were burning up, Heidi was determined to explore every alternative for getting tbe Cottonwood water into an efficient irrigation system. Heidi located a lavendar-coloresolid rock floor in the creek three miles up Cottonwood Canyon. The 10 foot creek depth there made a structure feasible for diverting water out of the channel. Below the natural ledge rock, the Cottonwood drainage becomes an enor- d, pre-registrati- mous channel, too deep and wide for diverting water. The Soil Conservation Service , at Heidis request, assisted her in a design to bring water out of the creek and into a pipeline. After an investigation by SCS of possible alternatives, it was decided that a concrete headwall, 100 feet long and three feet high, could be fastened to the rock floor with anchor bolts. The head wall then could withstand the pressure of floods caused by cloud bursts. The headwall diverts wa- ter into a and de-silti- Driving Course on March 9 in Blanding. The course will be held at the Blanding Senior Center, 177 East 200 North, and is required. There is a fee. The eight-hou- r course teaches a better way to drive in a program thats strong, incisive and memorable. You learn to recognize a hazard, understand the appropriate defense, and act correctly in time - in bad weather, on c mntry roads, on rush-hou- r expressways, with cyclists, and with fixed screening box, where it is sufficiently cleaned to pass through irrigation sprin- kler nozzles. Up to 1,200 gallons per minute enter a 10 inch plastic irrigation pipeline at the cleaning box, and flow three miles down Cottonwood Canyon to the Indian Creek Ranch. At this location, approximately 40 pounds of pressure develops to operate a gravity objects.
