Daryl Pelt suffered cuts and bruises but was not hospitalized. Lots of little batches of people gathering to plan the future actions after the recent elections. John Guy called a meeting at the DNA office, Halchita, asking for community input at the chapter meeting at Monument Valley. At the Oljato Chapter house meeting, outgoing local Councilman Jessie Black of Halchita officially turned his responsibilities over to newly elected Walter Atene of Monument Valley. Atene promised chapter funds to Halchita residents to defray costs of hauling wood and coal, using local labor and the chapter truck. The sound of gunfire south of the river was nothing to get excited about unless you were lucky enough to take a turkey home from the turkey shoot which Navajo cop Andy Begay organized. Winners are Larry Begay, Larry and Jerry Bitsinnie, Bob Mueller, Matilda Betsuie. and Fort Colli ns Environmental Consultant John Molenar was here to arrange for the placement of an air quality sampler. Equipment is being set up at Mexican Hat, Montieello, Cisco, Green River, Bullfrog, Hite, Island in the Sky at Canyonlands, Page, Grand Canyon, and Bryce. Field workers from the University of California at Davis will arrive the first of the year. Brad Lawrence and Reynold Tomes, also from Fort Collins, have now put a nice little scaffold behind our store and we await further action. Yvonne and Jerry Tsinnigin-ni- e from Page have been in town visiting Yvonnes parents, Pat and Hubert Cly. Bruce Hucko, of Montezuma Creek, came by my house one day while I was away in the hills and left a marvelous picture of an intact Anasazi ladder he had seen in a kiva on the mesa. Kent and Fern Frost stopped in on their way to Page. Nice to meet them. I can remember walking on icy sidewalks, back in Doylestown, Pennslyvannia, to the public library where I asked for books about southern San Junn County because there was some possibility we might move to that mysterious region. Kents book was one of the librarians selections. Yes, Kent, I really do the dumb things I write about. And it is the sad truth that I do get lost even more often than I care to admit. About a week ago I slipped away and drove east on that road at Milepost 27. 1 was being careful because it was cold and the shadows were lengthening but there was a marvelous view point and I sat down to eat an apple. Which required me to remove my little pack to get the apple. Which was okay except that I left without the pack in which my car keys were carefully secured. I was heading straight for the road when I suddenly realized that my car was not going to do me much good without the keys. I followed my footprints back toward the canyon with the And I hate following view I wander in every as myself direction. In fact if I ever got seriously in trouble up there, I would undoubtedly have to get myself out because I cant imagine anyone having the patience to track me down. The rescue party would throw up their hands in disgust and decide I wasnt worth the effort. However, I did find the back pack complete with keys. But by that time the sun was long gone and I sped directly south toward the road visualizing myself crawling around in the dark after I found it, looking for car tracks so I would know which direction to walk toward my transportation. With apologies to Carl Eisemann who threatens to disbar me from the Writers Guild if I mention my feet one more time, I must add that to my delight they went over some rough terrain very quickly without complaint. Now all we have to do is get the other end of me in shape. HWY 191 AND 666 M0NTICELL0 0 hMey Chrustiemsemi, Mamageir |
