Show Health, Home Broccoli or Brownies? Dropping excess pounds: Let your kids decide the rest Only 29 percent of parents allow their children to select what they want to eat. However, according to some experts, giving kids more freedom to make their own food choices is one of the best things parents can do. Teft to their own devices, children instinctively know when to eat and how much food is required to satisfy their hunger," says Dr. Timothy Brewerton, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Medical University of South Carolina. "The solution is not to control every morsel that goes into your child's mouth, but to be flexfole and to work with your child to establish sensible eating habits that wll last a lifetime." How can you work with your kids? Offer them variety and balance from the four major food groups in a family-styl- e setting, then let them decide on what foods and amounts go on their plates. Allow snacking. Snaking is fine as long as it is not all sweets or in excess. However, if you're concerned that "junk" food snacks are being eaten without discretion, fill your cookie jar with unsweetened graham crackers or substitute a candy bar with a low-fgranola bar. Designate a section of the refrigerator or cupboard as a "kids shelf." Children love to have something to call their own, This way parents can monitor especially when it is adult-likthe eating habits of their children, while still letting them make their own selections. Share the responsibility of main meals by planning menus together. This allows your children to maintain independence by making meal decisions with your guidance. In addition to giving your children more freedom to make food choices, Dr. Brewerton also recommends: Teach portion control by example. As role models, parents can demonstrate what is an "acceptable" helping. Its better to have the kids ask for seconds than to instill the concept of large portions up front. Never use manipulative tactics to coerce your children into eating certain foods. And don't resort to cliche phrases - such as "Children are starving in China, so clean your plate" - to get your kids to eat. This invites control struggles, adding to the stress of the situation and often causing them to rebel even - at e. more. The more times an individual repeats this cycle the more difficult it becomes to lose weight, eventually the body becomes resilient to weight loss. Couple this phenomenon with inactivity and a "Yo-Y- o" genetic predisposition for being overweight and you end up fighting a weight control battle that is nearly impossible to win. What can we do to overcome this? Powell explains, "Its a simple process but few people have the patience or discipline to try it. It involves long term changes, eating a well balanced diet and exercising regularly. The key word is lifestyle, these behaviors must be life-sty- le and cant OXVGEN & work. Initially these programs are effective; however, the body eventually adapts to this decrease in consumption by decreasing metabolic rate or the calories that the body bums. This drop in metabolism leads to slowed weight loss. Dieters eventually go off their diet and return to normal eatinghabits with a decreased ability to bum calories.
