Show iiitjritf Page B5 Voter Guide David von Zastrow Bpardi I am committed to working on a school board that is dedicated to formulating a strong strategic plan which includes specific implementation timelines. This will help us produce excellent graduates. After all, that is what the education system has been charged with. I am of the opinion that if the bar is raised high enough to further challenge our kids, we can reach a level of excellence that other school districts will want to emulate. Such a vantage point is surely better than the reverse. If you share my vision, please consider voting for me for the school board position. Tontinued from Pape Rd lb maximize education in Grand County and produce exemplar students we need: 1. Competitive Salaries anj Pv. emnlarv Teachers. I have met and talked with a few teachers within our district and I believe that many are exemplary with a commitment to match. However; in Grand County, the compensation level of exemplary, committed teachers is not on par with their excellence. Existing, available funds must be redirected into keeping and attracting the best teachers. 2. Class Size Reduction. Any teacher will tell you that smaller classes are more manageable, lend themselves to greater personal interaction and increased teacher preparation time per student. 3. Curriculum Focused on Ra- sics. To ensure that our students graduate from high school with a strong grasp of the fundamentals of a basic education - to read and write at a twelfth grade level, to understand mathematics, to be versed in sciences, geography and history. It may sound archaic, but school was not intended to be easy. A sound curriculum is essential for a good education. 4. My name is Carrie Bailey. I have been your representative on the Grand County Board of Education and an advocate for the children of Grand County for the past css school and improving our middle school facility.. .with the community supporting us by passing a Bond.... is a high point of the last seven years. We have great sports and recreation facilities for the kids as well as the community. We now have cafeterias at every school.. .serving nutritious breakfasts and lunches...and they are running in the black. Parents no longer need to worry about middle and students lunch-tim- e needs. Anyone visiting our schools can see at once that kids are a top priority in Grand County. While I have served on the Board our district has placed guidance counselors at the middle school and high school. Each student entering seventh grade develops a Student Education Plan, and with their coun- ' selor, plans their secondaiy education We have implemented a School to WorkCareers strategy at the high school level so that students will be better prepared to go on to higher education or the workplace after their graduation. I would like to continue as your advocate for creating more challenging and motivating curriculum experiences for our students. As a school board member, I have, and would continue, to create policies and guidelines that support and focus on student education and academic achievement. I would like to continue making Grand County School District a district where every child has an opportunity to learn. All children are different, but every child in our community must feel ownership and a sense of belonging when they attend our schools. Every student must feel they are respected and important. They also should understand their obligations and responsibilities to the educational process. School Board members make decisions that affect these aspects of the school environment and I have high-scho- BEST SCI-F- I CHARACTER COSTUME CONTEST (COSTUMES ARE OPTIONAL TO ATTEND) ai fjf'ii' TjHflF jjip iiYfiflpr-pi- 'r iyflf g3iii1raftrEw tut iayiytgtTirjpr-giM- jp"! Our three children have been enrolled in the Grand County Schools, and I think I understand the issues and concerns that parents and citizens have about our schools. I still have a child in our school system, and my husband and I operate a small business in Moab. I have been, and will be, available to discuss the issues. During the two terms that I have served, I have learned a lot about edu-- r cation fifid what we can do to improve '.our schools for our students. Grand County Schools and educators are working hard to make changes that will raise student achievement and performance. The district has made a major effort to improve math and reading skills. Our teachers have participated in many hours of training and inservice, and developed new teaching strategies to better serve todays students. Involving parents and community in our schools has been a major goal. As a board member, I have tried to make sure that parents always know that their input is welcome and needed. Our school district, after some tough economic times in the early 90s, is in good financial condition. We are managing the taxpayers money thoughtfully.
