Music, drama, speech, and art classes must be in place. Sports and physical education classes and concerns must also continue for each student to utilize. I have a strong belief that standards of education must be kept high. Not only do we need to produce high scores on the types of tests examined nationally, but high grades need to reflect solid knowledge and workable skills. In a related consideration, I believe that eligibility requirements for sports and extracurricular participation need to be kept high. In those areas, however, the needs of the less academically talented need to be considered as those programs might be very important to the development of some of those individuals. The classroom is the core of the well-round- Continoed from Page B3 the public and the years I have spent in the local education system give me a "hands on feel for the needs of Moab youth and for the expectations of the community. I have a strong belief in the importance of a good education as our young people prepare to sustain themselves and contribute to the community . The basics must be the beginning of an adequate education. The person who reads poorly will be handicapped throughout his life; math and writing skills are also vital. In a nineties society, computers and technical skills are in that same necessary category. Though an expensive program, it needs to be strong throughout the system. Each child has the right to feel comfortable, secure, and be provided with a program in which he or she can succeed. This classroom needs to be led by a qualified, caring teacher who is aware of the needs of each student and has a personal interest in that child or youth. One of the characteristics of that classroom will be a manageable teacherstu-den- t ratio where each student can receive the benefit of individual attention and a challenging, rewarding program. To attract the kind of teacher this type of program needs, our teacher salaries must reach at least the state average with the salaries of surrounding states considered as well. One of the tragedies of our district is the beginning teacher who works here two or three years and then, with the years of experience we have provided is lured to a better paying job in a nearby state. Other fine teachers leave the classroom for better paying positions in adminis- Grand County School Board No. 5 Bruce Louthan I am currently serving as your School Board representative from District and would like to continue working for you to improve our schools. I am currently serving as Board My family has lived in Moab for 23 years. Three of our five children have graduated from Grand County High School and, with 2 sons and a granddaughter currently enrolled and more to come, my interests in schools range from top to bottom. With the new high school and tration. To learn well, each student has the right to feel safe in his classroom. Incidents involving knives or guns receive much attention, but unkind treatment by other students or staff can also be devastating and education threatening. Universal values concerning human relations, therefore, need to be a part ofa good learning environment, although values espoused by isolated groups, obviously cannot and should not be catered to. There are problem areas in the district that the current school board is devoting a great deal of effort to at present. As a board member, I would work hard to further these goals and to lend my own personal expertise to bringing them to fruition. Community input into the educational process is important if our students are to have the type of education which reflects the expectations and values of the community. The present board and administration has done a good job in this area, yet more can be done and I will devote my efforts to this phase of cooperation. If elected, I pledge that my untiring efforts will be devoted to improving the quality of Grand County schools. Each student has the right to expect the best and the community has the right to expect that, quality of education from the system' which its taxes support. school-communi- 5 other physical facilities in good shape, we need to shift our focus to the Strategic Plan and identify priorities for the next five or so years. The year 2000 computer problem is coming upon us (as such crises regularly do) and we will have to deal with it. But we also need to address more basic programs if we are to see real progress in our students results. Perhaps the most crucial of these is Reading. While we have seen recent improvements, some children with normal potential still get through the system with minimal skills. We need to forge mechanisms to identify these children earlier and team with parents to insure that they achieve to their fullest capacity. Our overall achievement is not what it could be. Together parents and teachers need to break this cycle of low attainment. We also need to focus on helping students find interesting and challenging careers to work toward; sort of Vocational Education plus. The current School to Careers program in our district is just starting but the success in other rural Utah communities is amazing. Beaver started such a program before state and federal funding existed and have really made it work. Their example shows that the community must make this happen through changing attitudes toward schools and student employment. The fact is that 80 percent of jobs do not require a college education and that will continue. We must not shortchange our kids opportunities and range of choices. Remember, it does not take a rocket scientist to be a chef (although we have one doing that in Moab!!) but strong vocational education choices will result in better life choices and happier kids (and parents)! Budget issues are always important in any entity and these have been constantly in my mind. Through the state school board association, I have been involved in legislative and financial committees, bringing $65,000 from the financial cooperative to help pay financing costs on the new high school. We continue to need to stretch our scarce dollars to attract and keep excellent teachers and staff. To maintain that priority, we cannot always do everything else we would like. We must achieve balance but needs must precede wants. Moab is a wonderfully diverse community which can provide a tremendous education and upbringing for our children. But I am convinced that we parents have to be involved and supportive to insure that our children get the most out of the system. I urge you as parents, relatives and community adults to get involved in school and youth activities wherever you can. Such parental commitment led to the addition of Soccer as a high school sport involving another 17 percent of the.stu: dents previously not involved. It is not easy but it is worth it. We have come a long way in our schools but there is much left to be done. And always we need to focus on what is best for our children. I appreciate all the support for schools and kids that we on the Board have seen in the past few years. Please keep it up!! David von Zastrow Like many parents, I began to take a much greater interest in our educational system when my son, Max, entered school. As I attended school board meetings, I was surprised to find that the word Education was virtually never mentioned - indeed, the focus was primarily on business and administrative issues. I would like to reverse this, as I believe the primary role of the school board should focus on matters that directly impact the quality of education. It appears to me that we have a competent superintendent and district staff to handle the simple administrative details which take so much of the rr - RE-ELEC- L. : . i i ( I Location, Location, Location Main Street Property For Sale 690 South Main High Traffic Area Shopping Center Restaurant Lot Size: 30x346 (0.24 Acre) Bldg approx. 1500 sq. ft. It is crucial, therefore, to set the bar high and push our kids and educators to set their sights on a higher, more challenging standard. Nowhere is it written that school should be easy and that every student should breeze through it, but Ive come to believe that many parents and most students believe that such is the case. Some complain that if its hard to get an A, there is something wrong with the curriculum or the teacher. Lets face it, a good education requires hard work on everyones part. Ultimately, the greatest number of students who will succeed in school and in the game of life are those who have developed personal discipline and have the dedication and unrelenting commitment of parents, teachers andor others supporting them in their endeavors. This is something that the school district can foster, but cannot have much control over. What we CAN control is: 1. What is taught 2. How it is taught, and 3. What is expected of our students and teachers. I ON THE BALLOT ENVELOPE NOV. 3. THANK YOU. e children are insufficiently T JIM LEWIS t - national or state norm.
