Show Sunday, October 30, 1994 - THE DAILY HERALD, Provo, Utah, Page E7 Actor Kurt Russell is still Handbell enjoying a hearty career pjjjjjj," 3 By LUAINE LEE News Service ; He may have been a dimpled child actor with loads of candor and Huck Finn appeal, but Kurt Russell is a big boy now. In fact, Russell and director-acto- r Ron Howard are two of the very few child actors who grew up without some permanent damage to their psyches. Russell not only survived the perils of puerile fame, he has managed to enjoy a hearty career as a grownup and a robust 1 1 year relationship with actress Goldie Hawn. "Whatever was difficult for me in dealing with all things due to -- financial success, finanacting cial failure, relationship success, relationship failure, recognizabili-ty- , not enough recognizability, too much celebrity, not enough I dealt with at a pretty early age. And continued to look at it in my own life and try to figure out where lam," he says. Russell, 43, pretty much knows where he is. And where he is now is starring in StarGate, the historical sci-- fi adventure that casts him as a tough soldier who is transported into another dimension. Acting came naturally to him, even when he was a kid. "My dad was an actor and I remember we went on sets and I saw him having fun. I did see and I remember that he was home a lot of the time. And ' I thought that was a hell of a way to make a living. The pay was good. And I always thought I could do The Orem Community Handbell Choir will present its annual Fall Concert on Friday at 7 p.m. in the Provo Tabernacle, 100 S. My only question was how do you do it better?" and Arizona. Actor Kurt Russell Russell created so memorably Escape to New York. in Russell also confides he was being considered for a role in Forrest Gump, but couldn't do it because it conflicted with StarGate. He says it was not the Tom Hanks role, but he won't say which part it was. The program Friday evening will include original compositions for the handbells as well as popular favorites arranged for both voice and handbells. The evening will conclude with the handbell choir and the Musettes joining together to perform Ode to Joy. English handbells were originally developed as a practice instrument for the larger carillon bells. The smaller size soon caught on as an instrument on its own. Since Photo courtesy Karen The Orem Community Handbell Chair will present a concert on Friday in the Provo Tabernacle. that time, the bells have been refined to the musical instrument that they are today. Cast out of copper and tin, handbells are each tuned to a particular note. When rung together, the bells produce rich overtones similar to those heard from the larger carillon bells. The Orem Community Handbell Choir is a group and its 13 members come from all walks of life. In the three Russell did what most budding thespians did. He put on shows for ; his parents" He remembers his first .'time on local television when he i was told to read a card from young viewers seeking baseball advice. ONE Instead of reading the letter straight, Russell took it upon him-- ; Russell had a better idea. He was 9 when he had his first Our ; role: one line on the sitcom ' Man Higgins, which starred Stan-- '. ley Hollo way. i "This sounds incredibly arro- -' gant, but I knew the first time I did it, I could do it for a living," he says, "no question. I just said, this I is what you do. My only question ; was how do you do it better?" A trusty common sense has I buoyed Russell, even when things "were bad. The hardest time, he ; says, was the six months before his divorce from actress Season Hub-- 'i ley and the two years following it. ! "There were a lot of changes in ;my life," he says, "and I just 1 '. -- couldn't have imagined living without my son all the time. It's ;hard for me to imagine, even as ; I've done it being a father who hasn't lived every day with input !into his son's life and my son's input into mine." Shaking his head, he says, "That was something so shocking ' to me I just try to deal with it on a ; basis. It's something that happened to ; unimaginable ', day-to-d- ay DOCTOR IS RIGHTfor EVERY BODY n, ; have to look at and probably do.' But as time went by I think the children drew respect about it. It was a strengthening thing for them rather than a difficult thing. "So it became something that, at one point, we didn't want to do. Now it's so far past the point of having any meaning to us that we " just don't think about it. In spite of the success of their relationship, Russell doesn't take it for granted. "I can mess things up instantly," he says. "I have the ability to blow the relationship that is fantastic with Goldie that's existed for 1 1 years. I have the ability to blow that off this afternoon. I have the ability to make gigantic errors and do make them. But I try to avoid that." Russell has a keen sense when it comes to movies. He remembers he turned down Clash of the Titans, even though it was starring OliMaggie Smith and Laurence vier. "It smelled like 'stink' and in those days I wasn't turning down roles," he says. It turned out he was right, it was not considered a winner in spite of its Ray Harryhausen special ef- fects. to Currently Russell is talking John Carpenter mogul-writer with about doing something new that Phsken Snake fcharacter the " ' sonal choices you'll ever have . , to make.
