Heading into this weekend, Republicans were leading in every race for a seat now held by the GOP. One. for the seat of retiring Sen. David Durenberger in Minnesota, was considered a tossup. pitting conservative Republican Rep. Rod Grams against liberal state lawmaker Ann Wynia. And Democrats moved within striking distance of two GOP incumbents. Sens. Slade Gorton of Wellington and James Jeffords of Vermont. "'We passed Hansen's cave (Timpanogos Cave) and passed mills and mines and finally came to Deer Creek City." He continued higher up the canyon to a grassy meadow with quaking aspens. "It was love at first sight," he said. And Tyng took a lease on the spot and started digging the Arizona mine. He set off in search of the moth-erlodbut after a while his money to run out and he still hadn't began struck paydirt. "It was so sad going broke," Tyng said. When the last of his funds were gone, he told his miners he was going into American Fork and would come back to close the mine. Mine foreman John Howe asked if, while Tyng was gone, he could blast just one more section. "It won't do any harm," he said. When a depressed Tyng arrived back from American Fork, he was met by his exuberant miners. They struck it rich, unearthing a carbide ore, vein of high-grad- e composed of zinc, lead, silver and gold. Tyng said the vein was almost like sand and highly concentrated. e, Meantime, Republican efforts ORTON: (Continued from Page Al) It is home to an active It was winter. They wrapped 350 pounds in bags and dragged the ore out to be cashed out. Some of the ore was almost as if it had already been refined, about 47 percent zinc and 50 percent lead, with silver, and about $12 worth of gold per ton. Afraid they might be robbed transporting some of the more concentrated material out of the canyon, Tyng and his men hauled it out by going over the mountain into what is now Alta and down Little Cottonwood Canyon. In a short time, Tyng pulled more than $800,000 worth of ore out of the Arizona, becoming a rich man. He built a boardinghouse for the miners and became nearly famous for paying his employees a dollar more per day than the other mines. A boardinghouse at the mine had a string band play, and customers dined on white linen. So good was the food, music and ambiance that when the railroad was completed and still running, people from Salt Lake would come up on the weekend to dine. Tyng probably heard the avalanche that killed him. Those who found him said it appeared he may have gotten up from his desk and walked to the door. He was found still clutching a pencil. A large nail had pierced his head near his eye. ultracon-servativ- e for 1992 turned into "a comedy of errors," Magleby said. First off, the party's rabid desire to wrest the 2nd District from the Democrats caused them to trim the movement, western portion of Salt Lake County from that district and tack it on to the 3rd Dis- his single largest victory in America in 1980. Hardly a place for a trict. But the plan backfired. Democrat Karen Shepherd won in the 2nd District, and the gerrymandered strip of Salt Lake County added support for Orton in the 3rd. Then the GOP fumbled again. There were six or seven viable candidates, all of whom stepped aside when then-L- t. Gov. Val Ove-so- n announced he'd run. But Oveson changed his mind a month or so later, and few of the others wanted to play catchup. Republican Richard Harrington, who rode a horse onto the stage of the state convention to accept the nomination, was never taken seriously. Orton again won by a margin. stomping grounds of the John Birch Society, and its voters gave Ronald Reagan liberal, certainly, but unusual territory for a Democrat of any stripe. So unusual, in fact, that the Republicans were lulled into a belief that the walls of their bastion were unassailable. Republican Rep. Howard Nielsen had served five terms and a GOP successor was almost a foregone conclusion. But in 1990, according to BYU's Magleby, two things happened. One was a fractious Republican primary between Karl Snow and former California lieutenant governor John Harmer. The other was the census and the 1992 redis- ricting. Snow won the primary, but was damaged merchandise after weeks of Harmer's nasty tactics and an inability to shed business ties to a convicted stock manipulator. Then, just days before the election. Snow's campaign published a below-the-be- lt ad depicting Snow and his large family on one side and the single Orton. alone, on the other. "Bill Orton and his Family." the text read.
