In true musical comedy tradition, it is full of colorful characters who certainly strut their stuff. Britani Martin is one wonderful with stimulating pick as Reno Sweeney, the gal who comes aboard the cruise ship accompanied by her ladies in waiting: Purity, Charity, Chastity and Virtue. Worldly, wise and with a heart of purest gold, Martin's Reno is slick, sleek and sexy. She is also quite capable of winning viewers' hearts while she's always losing hers to the wrong man. As Billy Crocker, the play's romantic hero, Jason A. Hughes alternates between handsome and hilarious. Billy has fallen head over heels in love with Hope, a stunning debutante. Of course, his situation is hopeless since he's too poor and industrious to make the match. But, in the best musical tradition, Billy is full of disguises and surprises. He proves versatile and persistent enough to get his girl even when it means masquerading as a sailor, a gangster or a creaky old lady. As the love of Billy's life, Dian-n- a Lynn Errico's Hope Harcourt is lywood supporters at a recent ACTIVISM: ing about Hollywood drew 250 guests. Jeff Sagansky, the second executive of Sony Corp. USA, is a principal backer of Republican Michael Huffing-ton'- s bid for the U.S. Senate. Hol highest-r- anking n I As the English Lord Evelyn Oakleigh, Will Swenson demonstrates classic English restraint and perfect comic timing. Also, Jen McReavy is downright delicious as Erma, the beautiful, bubbly, blond bimbo. A. Cameron Sevy is Moon-fac- e Erma's partner in crime a Martin, gangster disguised as a priest. From her very first scene, Martin clearly demonstrates that she can really belt out a song. And she gets a chance to sing some of the most marvelous melodies that Cole Porter produced, including Get a Kick Out of You, You're the Top and the rousing Blow, Gabriel, Blow. The musical is full of nimble says, adding that outspoken actor Charlton Heston has been "marginalized" in Hollywood for his conservative beliefs. "My agenda (in the conference) was just to make it more comfortable to humanize and legitimize those people in town who don't agree with the liberal party line," against conservatives," Horowitz Horowitz says. The participants in the conference included Major Dad star Gerald McRaney, Tom Selleck, Hes Frank Price and Hanoi Hilton screenwriter Lionel Chetwynd. David Horowitz, a radio commentator and an organizer of the Summit, says Hollywood's conservatives have been in hiding until recently. Tall and slender, she always appears in long white gowns crowned with a romantic aura of sparkling diamonds. When she sings Goodbye, Little Dream, Goodbye and then duets with Billy during the beautiful love ballad All Through the Night, her voice is lovely and at times operatic. 3 right-win- g lyrics and nimble feet. In syncosailpated movement, white-suite- d ors strut and dance with mops. Later, Billy and Hope whirl around the stage together in ballroom dancing reminiscent of Fred As-tai- re and Ginger Rogers. Reno takes the stage in a red, white and blue sailor suit to lead the entire company in first-clatap dancing. ss It's encouraging to see generation after generation appreciate the wit and sophistication of Cole Porter. The night I saw the play, the audience was filled with hundreds of students, many of whom were in attendance on assignment from humanities classes. And they loved it. They burst into applause right after the overture and eventually gave the entire performance a rousing standing ovation. Go see Anything Goes. You'll definitely get a kick out of it. George G. For all the upheaval in Hollywood politics, there are some lessons still unlearned. On Oct. 17, the Environmental Media Association honored those television shows and feature films carrying positive environmental messages. The planet was on center stage but vanity did not take the night off. w Madonna CD offers few rewards for listeners Madonna Bedtime Stories MaverickSire Grade: C- - ""H Madonna's sound has definitely changed over the years. Completely abandoning the light pop influences that fueled her rise to fame, the singer offers a more subdued sound on her newest release Bedtime Stories. A follow-u- p to the controversial album Erotica and the book Sex, Bedtime Stories is Madonna's seventh album of new material. Having gained popularity in the 1980s with light pop tunes such as Lucky Star and Like a Virgin, the singer has chosen to embrace the hip hop style of the '90s on Bedtime Stories. These songs have subdued background music that is felt more than heard; they lack the full production sound and drive of hits such as Express Yourself. A heavy bass line and drums keep the beat and vocals carry the melody. Any other instrumentation used is light and kept in the background. The overall effect offers an impression of music rather than any- thing really concrete; one can't imagine that these songs would main interesting after repeated tenings. ground music and will never FROM SALT LAKE OTY TO: Lin One-Wa- y achieve any sort of prominence on its own. A plus is Madonna's voice, which is always confident and fluid. However, it's not enough to raise the interest in this album. The bass lines and rhythms grow repetitive and some effects are downright annoying. For example, an underlying static can be heard on track three, I'd Rather Be Your Lover; it sounds like an old, scratched vinyl record. Some might call it innovative; it's really just intrusive. In the end, Madonna redeems herself a bit with the last song on the disc, Take a Bow, a beautiful love song with smooth strings, sparkling bell tones and a slow, syncopated beat that gives it a slight calypso feel. Unlike many of the songs on this disc, this piece has direction and purpose; it's a refreshing change. Fans of Madonna's newer work may be a little more forgiving. But fans of Madonna's earlier hits should simply steer clear. 6M A.M. - 659 P.M. 7WPM.-55- AM. 9 MON-FR- J ALL DAY SATSUN ALBUQUERQUE $64 $64 AMAR1LL0 $89 $89 AUSTIN $99 $99 BALTIMORE (BWl) $174 $174 BIRMINGHAM $164 $164 BOISE $29 $29 BURBANK $44 $44 CHICAGO (MIDWAY) $114 $114 CLEVELAND $129 $124 COLUMBUS $122 $117 DETROIT $129 $124 EL PASO $69 $69 HOUSTON (HOBBY) $99 $99 INDIANAPOLIS $114 $114 KANSAS CITY $99 $99 LAS VEGAS $29 $29 $119 $119 $44 $44 $114 $114 LUBBOCK $94 $94 MIDLANDODESSA $99 $94 $149 $149 NEW ORLEANS $99 $99 OAKLAND $44 $44 $109 $109 ONTARIO $44 $44 ORANGE COUNTY $44 $44 PHOENIX $44 $44 PORTLAND $44 $44 RENOTAHOE $29 $29 SACRAMENTO $44 $44 SAN ANTONIO $99 $99 SAN DIEGO $44 $44 SEATTLE $44 $44 SPOKANE $44 $44 ST.
