The fishing isn't worth the trip but the scenery Special to The Daily Herald At dawn, on the fifth of October, approximately 32,000 hunters will begin their quest to bag a wily wapiti, which is more commonly known as an elk. The number of hunters could go as high as 40,000, which is the limit on general elk permits, but earlier this week many permits remained unsold. Regardless of the number, it is anticipated that those going on the elk hunt will have good success. Utah's elk herds have fared much better than the deer herds in recent years. While the muleys have struggled to maintain a foothold, the elk have continued to thrive and expand their range. Such positive growth for the herds will provide excellent opportunities for hunters. One secret to success during the elk hunt is to scout ahead. Knowing where the elk are on opening morning can save frustration and work. If you are not sure where the animals are, start covering country until you find fresh sign or see animals. When you know you are in elk country, then begin to hunt. The easy elk, if there is such a thing, will be taken on opening morning. Once the animals have been spooked, the hunt really be- gins. Wary elk will leave the open meadows and quakie forests to take refuge in the heaviest, thickest timber they can find. All they need is a spring for water, grass for food, and heavy timber to keep them hidden. Getting to them will take all of the hunting skill that you can muster, plus a good dose of luck. When going out on the hunt, take PAYSON LAKE The fishing along a good pair of binoculars and let your eyes do the exploring before you hike. Take some time to glass the pine forests for tiny pockets of brush or grassy openings. Elk will often hide in these areas has picked up with the cool weather. Use green Power Bait on a sliding sinker rig. CURRANT CREEK Fair to lent, wonderful perch fishing on the south end. If you like nine- - to perch, go give this one a try. Many hunters carry elk calls to try and call in a bull. I have found that on public lands, many bulls become wary of elk bugles because they have been fooled. It is not uncommon for bulls to quit calling completely when the hunt begins. With the heavy hunting pressure during the general season, hunters will probably have more luck spotting and stalking, than attempting to call in a bull. When you go, take along the M2 HartA heating systems that save money and energy. Like Bryant's Plus 90i, it's so advanced, it constantly adjusts itself to maintain a constant, comfortable temperature throughout your home. It's the world's most totally efficient natural gas furnace. So call Bryant to the Rescue today! CeoHitJ System Smce 1904 necessary equipment to survive winter in the mountains. The beautiful fall weather we have been enjoying could rapidly change, and a hunting trip to the mountains could become a test of survival should an unexpected storm move through. Remember that elk are much more difficult to move than deer, so pack along a rope with pulleys, a pack saw, and a pack frame. These will come in handy when it comes to quartering and hauling out a bull. I have learned from experi- ence that it is much easier to out pack a quarter of elk than it is to drag one out. The elk herds in Utah are doing fine. Those hunters who are willing to work, and do a little advanced planning, may have the chance to fill their freezers with some of the finest game meat that is available. Even if you are not successful, elk hunting is a great excuse to get outdoors, and is sure to provide some wonderful stories about ones that got away.
