Show Thursday, September 29, Brown is now the season's new black By FRANCINE PARNES For AP Special Features It's fall's hottest hue, so don't just call it brown. If it's warm, call toast; earthy, deem it mushroom; luxurious, label it sable. Calvin Klein's run of brown includes luscious color names such as coffee bean, chocolate and walnut. it Many a recent season has begun on the premise that brown will chase black on the popularity chart. This year, it's full of promise because brown, in its deepest, richest tones, is perfectly suited to the plushness of fall's textures, including suede, leather, mohair and shearling. Just be sure your makeup palette w "When you wear brown near your face, you need to bring up more reds and corals in your makeup so you don't look washed out," says Nancy Husted, fashion director for Nieman Marcus in Denver. u Adrienne Vittadini has created luxurious knit dressing in shades of nutmeg, chocolate and mocha. Yams are lambswool and angora blends, mohair and wool. Cabled tunics are to mix and match w ith woven trousers and jersey knit pants at about $200 apiece. "When we saw brown on the runways, it was so rich." recalls David Nutterfield, fashion director for I. Magnin in San Francisco. Maybe that's why the specialty store featured brown on the cover AP Pholo This chiffon velvet dress is described by designer Calvin Klein as the color of sable. "We're seeing it in a lot of different shades, but every single shade is rich," Nutterfield says. "They're true browns, not muted, not washed out." Husted agrees. .Fall fashions have crazy color names By VALLI HERMAN Some designers seem to have almost as much fun thinking up new color names as they do creating clothes. I want her to wait until she is older, preferably 18. What I want to know is: are kneesocks in style for school girls? -- D.S. Many a recent season has begun on the premise that brown will chase black on DEAR D.S.: The doctor isn't quite sure w hat the age at which one begins shaving one's legs has to do with whether kneesocks are in style for school girls. The doctor believes that the decision should be based on just how much hair is on your daughter's legs. If she has a forest growing on her shins and she desperately wants to shave, relent. Let her pick up a razor. If she's got a few thin hairs growing on her legs, hold fast. Tell her that the hair is for funky brown mini kilts and long, slinky charmeuse slips. "Animal prints, fake furs and menswear styles made a hit on runways for fall, and brown mixes well with all of those messages." says Phillip Monaghan, executive vice president of marketing for Express stores in Columbus, Ohio. A brown herringbone cropped jacket, for example, looks great with blue jeans, Monaghan says. "It's more textured and really is the update of menswear which has been traditionally done in black and white," he adds. "It's warmer and more sophisticated w hen interpreted in shades ofbrow n."
