Show 1994 Thursday, September 29, Airport to receive additional funding SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Salt Lake International Airport will receive an additional S6 million in federal funding to continue work on expanding its third runway. ' Rep. Karen Shepherd, said the grant from the U.S. Transportation Department was recognition of the terminal's status as "one of the fastest growing airports in the country. "This funding is crucial in helping the airport meet the demands of the 21st Century," Shepherd said Wednesday. The $6 million is in addition to the $12 million grant the airport received when Transportation Secretary Federico Pena visited Utah in August. The new money comes from the department's discretionary funds, which must be spent before the 1994 fiscal year expires on Friday. The State of Utah Economic and Demographic Projections 1994, which shows what lies ahead for the state if trends continue, will be updated again in two years. The study projected that Utah's population will continue to grow relatively rapidly, and is expected to reach 2.13 million by 2000. 2.6 million by 2010 and 3.11 million by 2020. Although the projected average annual growth rate decelerates from 2.1 percent in the 1990s to 1.8 percent in the 2010s, the rates are more than double those projected for the nation as a A .FREMONT (AP) timber sale on Thousand Lake Mountain has been sabotaged by 66-ac- re tree spiking, but the lumber company plans to go ahead with the harvest. ed ce An anonymous caller warned fehlake National Forest officials earlier this month that the trees had been spiked. h steel Investigators found spikes imbedded in Engelmann spruce trees throughout the parcel. The heads had been cut off many spikes to make them hard to find and remove. The spikes were anywhere from 4 to 1 2 feet from the base of the tree, the Forest Service said. The agency said Wednesday that a $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to a conviction. Tips should be relayed to Fish-lak- e officer Ralph Goddard or Wayne County Sheriff Leeon Brinkerhoff. "Spiking can be really dangerous," Goddard said. "If a spiked tree gets into a sawmill, (spikes) can take the teeth off the saw. Sometimes the sawblade will disintegrate and throw shrapnel all over.
