Show m. T m, THE DAILY HERALD, Provo. Utah, 29, 1994 Thursday, September Scheslc High school senior fails the ultimate 'choice' test By LILY ESKELSON For The Daily Herald We were all set to go to Peach Days in Brigham City on a recent Saturday. We live in Murray, but Brigham City will always be hometown to my husband and me. As we don't get to Peach Days every year, it's special to make plans to spend the day watching the parade, eating Scuba burgers and picking out friends and relatives from the 1950s in Compton's Photography display. But mostly, it's a time when we can be with our two boys. We want mem to develop a connection with their history as we reminisce about growing up. We were just about to walk out the door when the phone rang. Jerd emy, the High School Senior, answered it and came up to me with puppy eyes. "Mom, my friend's Dad's company is having Lagoon Day today, and she wants to know if I can come. They have an extra ticket." I felt like someone popped my balloon. "But we're going to Grand-Exalte- Peach I Days." "Oh, puuullllleeeeezzzz. Mom. haven't been out with my friends for ..." he looks at his watch " ... almost seven hours now. Can go? Please? You wouldn't mind, would you?" Hurt look. Tears in the corner of my eyes. Deep sigh. "Jeremy, I'm not going to tell you I don't mind. I've been looking forward to this all week. It's important to me that we're all together; and, yes, it will hurt my feelings if you decide not to go, but I'm not going to force you. The decision is up to you." The ultimate "choice" test. I He looked deep into my pleading eyes for about two seconds, put the phone to his ear and said, "Hey I can go!" ! Wait. He made the wrong choice. The plan was for him to look deep into my pleading eyes and say, "Thank you kindly for the invitation, but I wouldn't dream of hurting my mother's feelings for all the world, and certainly not for a trip to Lagoon." Seriously, I really believed he'd choose that. I was crushed. He sang. "See ya! Have fun!" and jumped into the car we let him drive when he's a good boy. I got over it. We watched the parade with Grandma Grandpa Local students raise money to buy r helmet for Freedom Award winner By KYLE BARRICK Provo High School The Provo High School chapter of the National Students Safety Program (NSSP) raised $100 to buy a motorcycle helmet for the Freedom Award winner, Dr. Sanchez. Sanchez, a resident of Panala-ch- i, Mexico, provides medical supplies for the people of Panala-ch- i and the surrounding area. Dr. Sanchez receives only $400 per month from the government for medical supplies. While struggling to attain adequate supplies, Sanchez is trying to raise his four children. Sanchez's transportation in the hills of Panalachi is a motorcycle. With the translation help of Carrie Rollins, a Westridge Elementary School teacher, he says that, "Many nights I come home late from the Tahamara Hills. The road is either muddy or very rocky and rough. Sometimes I fall off the cycle. A helmet would sure help the next time I crashed. Helmets here in my country are too expensive for me to buy when there are others that need help." When Wendy Bills, the NSSP advisor, heard Sanchez's dilemma, she exclaimed, "What a great idea for our Provo High School student body and our NSSP safety club." Sanchez was presented with a $100 gift certificate at the home of Robert Woods. NSSP students making the presentation were Jake Boulter, Beth Roskelley and Allison Austill. The translator was Lind Williams, a Provo High English teacher. In other Provo High School news: The Senate Youth Program is for juniors and seniors who currently hold an elected office. But I was angry with Jeremy for choosing his friends over his family. Or maybe he was choosing emancipation over dependence. Or adulthood over childhood. Or Lagoon over Peach Days. In the final analysis, I suppose I was angry that I had given him a choice at all. And that I had not been successful in manipulating him into choosing what I wanted him to choose.
