Show Thursday, September 29, A Prigham Young University graduate student has received a $2,500 national scholarship from the country's foremost association of neuropsychology for his research on assessments of traumatic brain injuries. Sterling C. Johnson, a second-yegraduate student in clinical psychology, is the first student ever to receive the $2,500 Henry Hecean Scholarship. The grant is sponsored by the American Psychological Foundation together with the Division of Clinical Neuropsychology of the American g compute- r-assisted ar Psychological Association. "It's the first time we have given the award, and it is very prestigious," says Elizabeth Strause, director of the American Psychology Foundation. "It was awarded to encourage very talented graduate students in the field of neuropsy- tion of the brain that connects the cranium's two hemispheres, somewhat like an informational highway. "The study's main focus is to predict the outcome of patients by studying the corpus callosum and other brain structures after a traumatic brain injury," he says. "By knowing what the corpus callosum looks like and by know ing specific information about it, such as size, we may be able to predict patient outcome in a better way . " Johnson's research uses computer magnetic resonance imaging to visualize the corpus callosum chology." Johnson's ongoing research focuses on how traumatically-in-duce- d changes in the brain, particularly the brain's corpus callosum, affect behavioral abilities such as memory, language, motor and sensory perceptual functions. The corpus callosum is a middle sec and map its dimensions. "In many respects, the brain is the last frontier in science," says Erin D. Bigler, a BYU professor of psychology and Johnson's advisor. "We have learned more in the last two decades about the brain than all previous decades of scientific discovery combined. We can perform studies w ith human brain injury that w ere unimaginable just a decade ago. We are try ing to establish the basic parameters of the brain through imaging and assessing injury to the brain by comparing damaged areas to individuals. This allows us to non-injur- this information to predict outcome." The research was recently published in the scientific journal Neuropsychology. The article documented findings indicating the corpus callosum could be used as a direct index of white matter loss after a head injury to assess patient condition more accurately. "Right now patient outcome is a approach." Johnson says. "We hope to be able to predict outcome sooner than is now possible through this research.' wait-and-s- Cory L.
