With four of their top five players returning, the Utes were optimistic about the upcoming campaign. Unfortunately, things didn't quite turn out as planned for Utah. This year, Utah is coming off a disappointing season which saw the team place fifth in the WAC and 15th out of 16 in the NCAA Western Regional. The Utes lost four seniors to graduation performer including Matt Johnson. Yet they're still all-WA- C optimistic for the upcoming season. "We didn't play very well last year," Utah Coach Ron Branca admitted. "But we should be competitive this season if we play to our potential." season. "A lot of how well we do this year will depend on Ross Marcano," Branca said. "If he's as good as his scores indicate, he'll really be able to step in and help our team." Both men's and women's teams will face strong competition in their conferences. For the men, UTEP, BYU and UNM will be the main challengers for the conference title.
