The experts are heralding Rafsanjani as a moderate.' Their use of the term seems to be a stew of bloody hostage-takin- g game. Israel is not responsible for the Iranian-backe- d murder of Marine Lt. Col. William R. Higgins. Colonel Higgins was murdered by his captors, the Ayatollahs of Iran, the Syrians who control most of Lebanon, and Sheik Obeid 's partners. In fact, the colonel was murdered well before the present crisis. And Sheik Obeid is relaxing in a very comfortable cell, protected by 20th century standards of decency Which he and his allies continually ignore. Since it appears that negotiations are under way to gain the freedom of the hostages, a leverage created by the capture of Sheik Obeid, President Bush is bound to continue the ' diplomatic route. But watch him fraternity, is not using his pen to illustrate the inefficiency of former HUD Secretary Pierce, or to justify his western style quickdraw. Rowan is now condernning U.S. amateurism in dealing with the hostage crisis, and Israel's bravado for capturing Sheik Abdul Karim Obeid, a known terrorist hidden d Hasheni Rafsanjani, the duly elected president of Iran who convince his fanatical cronies across the Middle East to kill Americans and French financing raised, will indeed promote the perpetration of the sometimes-ant- p in point: It was none other than rethorical blow where it is deserved, in the very War Rooms where the '. hostage taking plans are drawn, and i gun, gun activist Carl T. Rowan, the Washington D.C. based syndicated columnist has scribbled in your local newspaper. No, this time Mr. Rowan, a venerable member of the Lebanon-base- - behind a Shiite cleric. Absurd, Rowan! The US. has been patient to the level of a coward in dealing with the Iranian government and the feudal "religious" zealots of the Middle East. President Bush and the State Department continue to exhibit the pathological signs of the metaphor, satire and oxymoron. It is odd that the Iranian president must exhort his allies to kill us in order to solidify his grasp over Iran. He is a classic disciple of his predecessor, Ruhollah statements coming out of Iran. Case Letters self-servin-g. United States to further finance his terrorists' probes against us. How much more abuse must we take before we abandon semantics for the sword of vengeance? How many Colonel Higgins' must die by terrorist hands? How many airplanes loaded with school girls must be blown out of the sky? How many William Buckleys must be tortured and killed? How many telegrams must our presidents forward to the widows of the diplomats in Iran in 1979. We should beware of conciliatory system and cost too many U.S. lives during the Vietnam War. Diplomacy is the tool used by civilized nations to defuse tense Those terrorists are hiding inside of the hajabs of their women and using their children as human shields. What a testimony to their courage. We must no longer pay the price for the Palestinian-Israel- i conflict. What is stopping those Palestinians from grabbing a white flag, inviting the world press, and staging peace marches to Israels capital? Would that not be more potent than killing Americans simply to sensationalize their plight? The Palestinians must be quite naive if they believe that they will pressure a solution to the crisis and secure the establishment of their own nation by brandishing guns, and screaming deadly slogans. As for Rowan, he should stick to Washington's bedroom gossips, and let real thinkers ponder over the geopolitical domino principles. However. Lebanon, Syria. Lybia, and Iran are not led by rational governments. If the law forbibs covert military action and the necessary elimination of terrorism, then the law must be expediently rejected. We are at war. and should deal with the enemy accordingly. The U.S. must learn from the Soviet KGB whose techniques in dealing with terrorists have proved mighty effective indeed.' When a number of Soviet subjects were kidnapped in Lebanon, the KGB wasted little time in apprehending family members of the kidnappers. The Soviets surgically removed the head of one of their prisoners and sent the physical evidence to the kidnappers. Bingo! The Soviet captives were released in record time. We need to deal with them similarly. . n I l T 1 I f STREAM Addresses available to all Editor: Pass this one on to James Reiger whose letter (Dissenting carries a price, Aug. 9) accused the Chronicle of not keeping his big address confidential: I called tpday (89) and got your,, address from the campus operator, as anyone, can for any student who A As employees of the Alcohol and Drug Education Center on the University campus, we want to respond to the letter "U of U must fight, not ignore drug crisis," (Aug. 9). - - ; sympathize with the writer's frustration over the pervasiveness of the drug problem not only on our campus but across the United States. We want to assure the writer and the campus community that the drug problem is not being We ignored. Our center was established Oct. 1988 and has been actively a involved in creating comprehensive campus-wid- e substance abuse prevention program. Some examples of the services that we provide include educational outreach, personal support for those experiencing problems, support groups for recovering students, literature and media resources and an Alcohol and Drug Awareness Week. In addition, three classes on substance use and abuse are available through the Health " Education Department. The concern of the university goes beyond the efforts of our center. The deans of Student Affairs are actively involved in efforts made toward substance abuse prevention. Committees have been asked to address policy ".. change and implementation, curriculum infusion and improving counseling and referral options. Athletic departments have been working with us at the center to improve what they currently do to help their athletes. Further, perhaps so many arrests are made on campus because Wayne Shepherd's police force is doing an excellent job at catching drug offenders. These offenders have remained active on campus because it is the students who are buying the drugs andor tolerating the criminal activity. Last, but most important, is the comment that the author of the letter has "witnessed" drug trafficking and arrests. Learning as : an individual to confront the problem in a constructive way is about being part of the solution. Confronting friends that are using drugs is difficult and requires skill. We encourage you to educate yourself about the complex issues underlying substance use and abuse; it is not simply a problem'of supply. Until we address the various reasons "why" individuals Editor: was not informed that the of the feature story "Pub cintent council member seeks funds to start new campus publication" (July 26) was to expose the "conflict of interest" that allegedly arises from my attempt to recruit staff for the Symposium, there are a number of -Jacts which I neglected to mention and must make clear at this time. First of all, your article stated that Since the I Symposium Supervisory Committee, of which I am chairman, plans to approach the Publications Council, of which I am a member, to ask for funding. The article also stated that I disagree that this would : constitute a conflict of interest. Neither of these statements is true. First of all, the conflict of interest that is suggested by this scenario is so obvious to me that I cannot help but feel offended by the accusation. Second, neither I nor any organization that I belong to plan to approach the Publications Council as long as I remain a member of both organizations. The, academic journal Symposium, which may or may not approach the Publications Council in the fall, is ah independently registered student organization of which I am not a member nor do I intend to become a member while I still sit on the Publications Council. The Symposium Supervisory Committee is a standing committee of an organization that I do belong called the Committe for Excellence in Campus Publications. The purpose of the Supervisory Committee is to serve in the role of a publications council prior to the acceptance of the journal by the official Publications Council. am investing my time and to serve the needs of the energy and academic community literary on this campus, I consider the "conflict of interest" charge to be an When I argument ad hominem that attempts to circumvent discussion of the merit of starting such a journal. , I think that it can 1)0 rather more plausibly argued that the real conflict of interest arises when the established school newspaper runs front page feature stories about alternative publications.
