As the '80s come to a close in an Sharon Deckert Chronicle Spectrum Editor ASUU's Seasons of the Arts have for the last two years provided a sample of entertainment that crosses artistic j) boundaries. The performances have included artistic ' ambassadors from dance, theatre and music and have usually represented the spectrum from classical to modern. "X. ,.. - The 1989-9- 0 season is no different Sandi Terry, performing arts coordinator for ASUU, said this season will include modern dance, musical theatre, blues and more. Finding outstanding performers to fill these categories and staying within the allotted budget, which has been cut this year, proved a difficult job, Terry said. To stretch the student budget, Terry worked with the Utah Arts rs: Council is one performance, and Space Agency is another. ASUU's Season of the Arts will present a cross section of music, musical theatre, blues and modern dance in its third season. ' :x;-:v- "rv p :,.v. . & "V! Susan Boskoff of the Utah Arts Council said the season is a valuable asset to the University of Utah. "The performing arts season is absolutely vital for any major university. It is valuable for students to learn not only academics but also the value of cultural life of their community, region and nation." Joan Baez will open the season Oct. 25. Just as the Season of the Arts spans the spectrum from classical to modern, this performer spans the music of more than one generation. Baez's career as both folk 4 ii1111- - i iiv singer and political activist has S'. spanned the political upheaval of atmosphere of conservatism and empty pop music, and as racism and ecological disasters are anything but abated, Baez's poignant messages are more relevant than ever. Garth Fagan Bucket Dance is slated to perform Feb. 6. Boskoff, who helped Terry coordinate this performance with the Utah Arts Council, calls this group "one of the hottest modern dance groups touring right now." The group has "very electric, very strong dancers and unique, energetic, wonderful choreography," she added. "H.M.S. Pinafore" by Opera A La Carte is scheduled for March 6. Richard Sheldon founded this full-scaGilbert and Sullivan touring group 20 years ago and said his group does the operettas le authentically and doesn't try to update or change the material. Sheldon said his group tours with an orchestra that is the exact size required in Sullivan's original score and the costumes and scenery are all authentic. For Gilbert and Sullivan fans irritated by performances that try to be cute by ad libbing with local material, this performance should be not only a relief but a sheer pleasure. . A date for ASUU's Blues Night Package is still being negotiated, but Terry said she is "looking for something that hasn't been brought to town." Before the remaining To Be Announced slot is filled, Terry plans to do some more shopping around. "I'm going to wait until I go to a conference and get something strange and unusual."
