Pat is to collegiate skiing what Warren By Dustin Morris Miller is to skiing films. Chronicle Sports Writer There axe two things that can be counted on in the world of skiing. The first is that lift pass prices will jump considerably each year. The second is that the University of Utah Ski Team will be a major contender for the national crown. Many would say that the Skiin' Utes are more than a contender. They would call the team a dynasty. The fact is that in the last seven years the Utes have amassed five national titles. They took second place in the years they didn't claim the title. Last year, despite the fact they NCAA the "didn't win won Utes the championship, which they every meet in competed. Heading the program since 1977, Skiing Director Pat Miller is the main coaching force The director, however, is hesitant to take credit for the past success of the ski team. "Most of the credit goes to the other coaches, Lester (Keller), our head alpine coach, Thor who coaches (Kallerud), women's alpine and Alan (Watson), cross country coach." This year, the Skiin' Utes lost seven skiers from a r team, including three Erik Baumann, Hans Martin Sjulstad and Henrick "It's one of the bigger losses our team has ever faced," Coach 23-mem- four-yea- All-America- Smith-Meye- r. Keller revealed. "You simply cannot find replacements for that kind of experience and talent," Miller added. Returning to the men's alpine team are Brent Nixon, Oeivind Ragnhildstveit, Chris Gibson and Morgan Mahanke. Nixon and Ragnhildstveit participated in the NCAA championships last year. Joining the returning skiers are Hans Peter Grill, John Ethan, Mike Sumanik and Frederick Allegre. transfer Grill comes from as a student Salzburg University in Austria where he represented his school in the World University Games. Ethan, from Two Harbors, Minn., has trained for three years in the Stratten Mountain School in Vermont and on the U.S. Ski Team Development Program. Canadian Sumanik joins the team from Nelson, British Columbia, where he skis on the British Columbia Ski Team. Anke Freidrich, all participants NCAA last in year's championship, and Gillian Frost. Recruited to aid the varsity squad Karaline Oreoge, is described by Coach Kallerud as a "very promising athlete." ld Coach Watson, seeking replacements for Baumann and Sjulstad of the men's cross country team, found Ole Henrik Evensen and Mark Gray. They will complement the experience of returning skiers Luke Bodensteiner, Tony Chambers, Andre Kuhn, Thomas Lium and Andy Rem. Evensen, a Norway native, has spent two years on the Norweigen Ski Development Allegre comes as a transfer student from the University of Savoie. The Chaenost, France, native competed in the World Program. Gray, who won't be joining the Utes until winter quarter, comes as the second ranked skier in his native Austrailia. "We have a good returning nucleus in the women's cross country team," Miller said. He said he wanted to improve the program in numbers and quality. "We've got a lot of good new people to add depth to the program," Miller added. "It's always a guessing game with new recruits," Miller remarked. "I do think we will be competitive for the title."
