Show ponlhicflinni from page bagger or a lunch." The program includes a video presentation in which victims .and offenders discuss violence in their lives and the consequences. After the video, three experts discuss 1) treatment services for victims, offenders and children; 2) shelters; and 3) legal information. The hour ends with a question and answer session and finally information is handed out which may be circulated to friends, coworkers, neighbors or family members. She said they have given briefings in the most unimaginable situations, including for large companies such as Utah Power and Light and Geneva Steel, as well as for small businesses with as little as four or five employees. "We simply ask the employer to invite us in. give us an hour, a room, turn the lights on and ask the employees to attend," she said. "If they can make it mandatory it is even better because that's what will get the people in the room to see the message that they need to see." She added that many people come to the program with a detached attitude about the presentation. Many have the attitude that they will simply indulge the female attorney general who has become interested in the topic of family violence and then they will leave. "These are the same people who are in tears after the presentation, lining up in the back and telling us, 'This is my secretary or my daughter or sister. What can I do? I don't know how to help them,' " Graham said. "This program is all about rescuing people from the problem." she said. "The people who are involved in these problems usually don't know how to get out. This program gives you useful information about how to begin that step of getting out." In a taped introduction for the video presentation, Graham tells all her audiences that the most important fact about family violence is that "it can change intervention works." 1 do about the problem." But Graham said that when she and her staff delved into any possible solutions they soon bumped up against the most elusive and difficult aspect of violence at home (both against adults and children) it happens and thrives in a world of secrecy. She said anyone who has ever been close to the problem, through a friend or family member, will recognize that the hallmark of violence at home is denial. Further, because of that atmosphere, children are learning at a very young age that it is a family shame and it is not to be talked about out of the home. "The problem is," Graham said, "it requires talking about it and letting light shine on the problem. It's the only way it can ever get better." So, she decided the best way to reach people who are involved in the problem, including the victim and offender as well as those that live and work around them, is to take a program to a place where they are at work. "We knew that if I were to hold a big seminar on family violence everyone would come except the people who are involved in the problem they are in denial and won't be there," she said. "So we designed this program. It's a workplace program, in length and great for a brown- about one-howell-designe- ABUSE te views were changed about the way the state dealt with problems of violence against children. "We call it child abuse," she explained, "but if you reviewed the cases that came across my desk you would know that the term 'violence against children' is much more descriptive. These are the kind of cases that are probably the hardest part of my job. "The stage that we all go through first is a deep sorrow knowing that those kinds of things are happening to those most precious to us our children," she said. "But it is our job to get past the sorrow and move on to precisely what it is we are going to d ur 5 Hilltop Times Aug. 17, 1995 , ST- Facts about domestic violence In Utah: More than 60.000 women are assaulted each year by an intimate partner.
