"We are finding fish out in 20 to 25 feet of water feeding on shad." says Tom Pettengill. sport fish coordinator. "The walleye are keying in on shad schools so using a lipped lure in silver and black, imitating shad, is working." At Starvation Reservoir near Vernal, walleye action is only starting to pick up. so conventional methods will prove worthy of your time. But, in lower elevation lakes, like Willard Bay, trolling deep is productive. "Trolling for walleye is popular in the Midwest, but not many Utah anglers have tried it yet. You will pick up smaller fish because there are so many, but you will get big ones too," Pettengill said. The shad are schooling in the upper 10 feet of water, the walleye are just below. Trolling at two to three mph. you are likely to attract walleye to hit your lure. As the shoreline bite slows, more fish will move to open water and by trolling, you are likely to catch walleye all summer long.
