Show HILL TOP TIMES Page 50 1SS3 Friday, April 23, May has been designated "American Bike Month" in honor of one of man's most practical modes of transportation. For 105 million Americans the bicycle is an alternative to driving cars. Over the past few years, Americans have increasingly relied on the bicycle to get around. In 1975, 500,000 Americans commuted to work by bicycle. The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that by 1985 that figure will rise to 2.5 million. Of course, the bike is still primarily used for recreational purposes, especially for physical fitness. A 1982 Nielsen study on the nation's favorite leisure-tim- e activities listed bicyclilng second right behind swimming. With the increased popularity of bicycling should be an increased safety awareness. Here are some tips for operating a bike safely: Ride single file. Bicycling shoulder-to-shoulde- r is not only law. A sudthe it's dangerous, against den swerve by a car or a fellow cyclist could be disastrous. Make sure you are visible at night. Move into traffic with caution. Bikes are small and sometimes hard for drivers to see. It is up to you to act as their eyes. Ride with the traffic. Always keep to the right and never ride against the flow of traffic. Remember to keep a safe distance between you and other vehicles. Be wary of parked cars. Watch car doors opening suddenly for out and vehicles pulling out into traffic. Use hand signals. Letting drivers know when you are going to stop or turn gives them an opportunity to adjust to your actions. Don't carry other riders. Drive defensively. Be on the lookout for pedestrians as well as vehicles.
