Show Spanish Fork Upsets Orem For Region Track Title Spanish Fork, Orem, and Pay-son Pay-son each had two double winners in the Region Four track and field meet last Saturday at the BYU Stadium - but the Dons added five more first places to Orem's three additional ones to win the Region Four crown from defending region and state champion cham-pion Orem. The two powerful teams will meet at state this Saturday at the . University of Utahstaduium, with Orem expected to gain more points in the state competition than the Dpns, Skyline and South will be the teams to beat. "It was just Spanish Fork's year to put it all together for the Region Four championship lamented Coach Bill Delaney. "They have a fine team and very good coaching. You must hand it to them for their fine competitive . efforts this year." ' The Dons scored heavily in several events as they topped the region with 98 12 points, followed by Orem with 76, Payson with 54, Provo 16, Springville 15 12, Lehl 14, Pleasant Grove 13, Carbon 11, and American Fork 9. Kevin Johnasen was a double winner for the Tigers as he took first place In the 440 and 220. Richard Baird for Orem took first in the mile, and the Tiger medley and mile relay teams took first places to help the cause. The mile relay team of Earl Christensen, Rick Louder, Loud-er, Tom Hansen, and Kevin Jo-hansen Jo-hansen missed by one-tenth of a second tleing the region record at 3:30.1 And Orem's medley relay team of Kent Flandro, Scott Zabrlskie, Dave De St. Joer, and Andy Allen set a new record (the only one of the day) at 3:41.1 Mike Gardner of Spanish Fork was a double winner In the low hurdles and high jump, and Dick Armstrong of Payson was a double winner in the low hurdles and the discus. Hunt Fish Day Set Sept. 23 National Hunting and Fishing Day, September 23, is now a reality. President Nixon recently signed Public Law 92-285 officially of-ficially declaring the fourth Sat, in September as National Hunting and Fishing Day. The celebration is planned to dramatize sportsmen's invaluable inval-uable contributions to the conservation con-servation and outdoor recreation movement and to encourage broader public participation in all phases of conservation work. All conservation organizations are being urged to join in sponsoring spon-soring the move to gain recognition recog-nition for the special day. They are encouraged to inform the public of conservation accomplishments accom-plishments and needs. Fish remains may be discarded dis-carded in lakes and reservoirs of Utah during fishing season provided it is done over 100 feet from shore, and it complies with special regulations on waters used for culinary purposes. Disposing of fish remains on shore should be done by burying in a suitable place, depositing in a trash can or carrying the remains home. Conservation officers will cite persons willfully violating litter laws by improperly discarding the fish viscera and trimmings. Windsor School Holds 5th Grade Science Fair The fifth grade class of Mr. Clegg at the Windsor School recently re-cently held a science fair in which the children were able to choose their own projects. They were allowed to work either individually or in groups of no more than three to a group. The first place winners of the contest were Val Marchbanks, Rodney Pulham, and Gary Cox, whose project was "Parts of Birds." The second place winner, Cheryl Dittmore, made her project pro-ject on the 'Pinhole Camera." Third place winners were Tom Anderson and Brian Jessee. All others who participated were given honorable mention ribbons. (220), Kent Flandro (440), and anchor man Scott Zabriskie (880). They broke the record previously held by an Orem team.) Tour West Continued graduated from Lincoln High School, graudated with a B.A. degree from Brigham Young University, Uni-versity, and also received his Master's Degree from BYU." During the second World War he served as a radio officer in the Maritime service. His resignation to the Alpine School District ended seventeen years of service in the local schools, serving as a teacher at Westmore, and as a Principal at Cedar Valley, Spencer and Windsor schools. During this time, he served as President of the Alpine Education Association, 'and President of the Alpine Elementary Principal's Association. Assoc-iation. Russ, who is the son of Orem's former Mayor, V. Emil Hansen, was elected to the Utah State Legislature in 1963-64, and is listed in the Who's Who in the West. He has a pilot's license and also a Ham Radio's Operator license. Hs has been active in the Latter-Day Saint Church, serving as a missionary in the Western States Mission, and as a Bishop in the Orem 26th Ward for eight years. Currently he is serving on the High Council of the Orem North Stake. Russ and his wife, Ramona, have seven children: Pennie, married to Bruce L. Thomas; Grant, serving in the Japan East Mission; Mark, serving in the Japan Central Mission; Tom, Gayle, James and Alan who are living at home. They also have a grandson,JasonBruce Thomas. Russ started running rivers as a hobby eight years ago and since that time summer river runs have developed into transporting hundreds of people down rivers throughout the Western United States. His hobbies include hunting, fishing, flying, radio, and river running. Eli E. Gourdin attended grade school at the old Sharon School, graduated from Lincoln High School, and attended the LDS Business College in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he studied Accounting and Business Administration. Mr. Stratton served as a Spanish AmericanMissionaryfor the LDS Church for 2 12 years, and has served as Scoutmaster, Explorer advisor, and youth leader several times, leading many activities for youth. He is presently active in the LDS Church as a member of the Orem North Stake High Council. His wife, Janet, and he have six children: Carol, who is married to Samuel Yadon; Janet, who is married to Alma Schurig; Susan, who is married to Dennis Harding; and David, Steven, and Lori, still living at home with their parents. Legion Plans Summer Baseball The American Legion Baseball Committee, baseball players, and fathers enjoyed an evening of planning, films and refreshments for the upcoming summer baseball base-ball program in Orem. The baseball season oepns May 31, 1972. There are twelve league games and approximately the same number of non-league opponents. Most games will be played on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. A complete schedule will be reported next week. Many of the Legion baseball players are selling raffle tickets to support the Orem baseball program. The raffle offers numberous prizes for winning ticket holders. Tennis Team Makes Bid For State Trophy After winning the Region Four tennis title, Orem qualified two singles players and two doubles teams for the state championship champion-ship scheduled this Saturday at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City at 9 a.m. Winning the number one doubles championship were Alan Cranney and Tom Briggs, stellar singles players of Orem who recently teamed up to play in region and now in state to work toward the state title in that catagory. Orem scoredl7 points, Provo 12, American Fork 11, Springville 8, Spanish Fork , Pleasant Grove, and Carbon, 6, Lehi 5, Payson 4. The number two doubles team of Dave Clark and Tom Peterson won the region championship and will go to state, as will Gary Sabin who won the number three singles championship.
