At this banquet the new officers for the club were announced and awards were given to the individual students who have excelled in various events throughout the year. Art Marshall was elected to serve as debate president for next year taking over the duties held by Roger Pace. The new debate manager replacing Mary Cope for next year is JoAimone. Venice Paul was elected club secretary sec-retary assuming her responsibilities respon-sibilities from Jamie TwitchelL Each year the members of the National Forensic League vote for ten of their peers to be listed on the Forensic Honor Scroll. These ten students have excelled in the area of speech and have been recognized for their achievements by the club. Awards and trophies were also given to those students picked by student committees who have excelled the best in certain catergories. Roger Pace was named the best Orator, JohnSabin the best Extempor, Eddie Keele the best Legislative Forumer, Robby Ledbetter the best Impromptuer.. and for the first time the award for best Debate Teams went to two teams instead of one. Jo Aimone and Don Allphin Al-lphin and also Mary Cope and Maria Thygerson was named the best forensic student. The debate squad at Orem High have had quite a successful season this year. All together they debated at 29 debate meets debating 956 times with 505 wins and 391 losses giving the squad a percentage of .591 which is the best percentage ever attained by a squad at Orem High. Some of the students have also done very well at individual meets throughout the year. On Nov. 20, Mary and Maria took a second place debate trophy at the Governors Gover-nors Cup Statewide Debate Tournament. This same team also took a second place ribbon at the Richfield Invitational Tournament on January 15. At the Carbon Meet held at the College of Eastern Utah on Jan. 27,Don Allphin and Jo Aimone won a first place debate trophy. Also at this meet, Roger Pace won a first place Oratory trophy. At the Alpine Forensics Meet held in Alpine School District on February 5, Roger Pace took a first place Oratory ribbon, Jan Crandal and Laura Houghton went undefeated in experienced debate and Eddie Keele and Robert Skranzas went undereated in novice debate. At this same meet Maria Thygerson took second place in extemp. At the Weber Meet attended by schools from three states, Utah, Idaho and Wyoming, held on February 11 and 12 several students stu-dents from Orem High excelled. Taking first place debate trophies were Laura Patten and Mike Kelley and the team of Mary Cope and Maria Thygerson. The next important meet attended at-tended by students from Orem High School was division forensics and debate held on March 9 and 15. Schools attending at-tending this meet were Orem, Lehi, Carbon, American Fork, and Pleasant Grove. Orem High accumulated more points throughout this meet and won both the division trophy and the traveling trophy. Those students who qualified for state competition com-petition through this division meet were the following: Maria Thygerson and Mary Cope, Don Allphin and Jo Aimone, Laura Patten and Mike Kelley, Vince Butterfield and Bob Parsons, Art Marshall and Renae Gilbert, Roger Pace and Brent Adams, and Robby Ledbetter and John Sabin in debate; Roger Pace and Nadene Dalley in oratory: Brent Friendship Week Proclaimed In Utah The week of May 2,8 through June 3 has been proclaimed "Friendship Week by Governor Calvin L. Rampton in honor of the 15th annual running of the Freindship Cruise from Green River to Moab, Utah on Memorial Mem-orial Day weekend. In making the declaration, Gov. Rampton recognized the great number of visitors from across the nation who come to southeastern Utah each year to participate in the 183-mile two day cruise down the Green River and up the Colorado Col-orado through some of the most rugged and beautiful scenery found anywhere. Officials of the Canyon Country Coun-try River Marathon Association (CCRMA)v on hand for the signing, sign-ing, said that 50 7 boats registered last year's cruise, and advance registrations for this year's event indicated an even greater turn out. "We've had registrations registra-tions from California and as far away as New York and Florida said Harry Thompson, this year's Commodore. "It's becoming real family activity, Thompson said, "mainly because it's a leisurely trip with few rapids and lots of opportunity to explore Indian ruins and points of interest along the way, he concluded. The Cruise begins at Green River State Park on Saturday, May 27th, with registration from 6 a.m. to noon. A $25 per boat fee covers launching assistance, assis-tance, search and rescue, movement move-ment of cars and trailers to Moab, constant radio communications, com-munications, and a big Friendship Feast on Sunday in Moab. Tidd assumed command of Navy recruiting re-cruiting from Rear Adm. William M, A. Greene in ceremonies held at the Washington, D. C. Navy Yard, April 12. Adm. E.R. Zummelt Jr., Chief of Naval Operations, was guest speaker at the affair, which marks the first change of command com-mand for the one-year-old Navy Recruitiag Command. . Adm. Tidd, who beganhisNavy career as a seaman apprentic in 1942, reports to Washington from sea duty where he was commander com-mander of Cruiser Destroyer Flotilla Six at Charleston, S.C. Adm, Greene, under whose guidance the new Navy Recruiting Command was organized, returns re-turns to sea duty as commander of Destroyer Flotilla Four at Norfolk, Va. The Navy unified its recruiting re-cruiting command under Adm. Greene. AU recruiting for active duty and selected reserve surface, sub-surface and aviation programs pro-grams were consolidated under the command. The new command combined recruiting functions formely conducted by the Navy Recruiting Service of the Bureau of Naval Personnel, the Naval Reserve Training Command and the Naval Air Reserve Training Command. Orem High Students was the National Forensic League District meet held in Idaho Falls on April 7 and 8. Three states attended this meet, Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming. Those students stu-dents progressing on to the final round of competition were Mary Cope and Roger Pace in Oratory who took fourth and seventh places respectfully and Maira Thygerson who took fourth places in Extemperanceous speaking. Roger Pace and John Sabin progressed to the semifinal semi-final state in boys extemp and Claudia Rigby made the semifinals semi-finals in girl's extemp.
