Show Taking the mystery out of d J No more voodoo. No more need for an advanced degree from MIT or Weber State. No more mystery. Scoring for the alpine W orld Cup used to be pretty hard to decipher. However, these da5 Cafe de Colombia World Cup scoring is down to the bastes so that : even a ski journalist can follow a. In the old days. World Cup points were awarded for the top 15 finishers in a race. Today, points are given to the top 30, I assuming 30 finish a race. (In the first I World Cup race at Park City a I women's slalom March 19, 1985 there were only 14 finishers ) Slalom and giant slalom races use what is commonly called a Htp-30" or "reverse-30" format to determine skiers for the second run. The top 30 skiers in the first run advance to the final run where they race in reverse order to the way they i finished the first run the 30th fastest goes first, the 29th goes second, etc., until the fastest skier from the first run Is the last to compete. That preserves the excitement excite-ment about w ho will be the winner urtil the last skier. "Flip-30" is used when conditions are expected to stay hard, or deteriorate only marginally. However, when conditions are poor, or are expected to deteriorate, organizers organ-izers will go to a "flip-15" format In that case, the fastest 15 skiers in the first run race in reverse order with the 15th finisher skiing first on the second run, the 14th skier going second, etc., until the top racer from the first run skis 15th. Then, racers 16-30 go in chronological order the 16th skier from the first run racing 16th on the second run. 17th going 1 7th, etc. "Flip-1 5 comes into play w iien officials feel it w ould unfairly penalize the fastest skier from the first run by making him or her race last w hen conditions have worsened a great deal. When World Cup standings w ere calculated cal-culated in the olden days (i.e., in the mid-1980s), an athlete often would have to drop a couple of results. He or she counted only the top five results. Today, there are no throw aw ays, no discards racers count every point from every ev ent. Today, the winner gets 1 00 points with 80 points for second. 60 for third, 50 for fourth, etc. That breakdown of points goes like this: Is. -100 IUh-24 21 -10 2nd - 80 12th 22 22nd - 3rd -60 Uth -20 21rd-S 4th-SO th-18 24th-7 Stfi-4S ISth-16 2Sth-6 6 -40 16h.l5 2h-S 7th - U 17th- 14 2nh SMi.32 ISth-IJ i Xh-29 t$m.l2 h-2 toth - si ' 2oh 1 1 sm - i PAQCC CITY MOUNTAIN Q0SQT Olympic competition schedule of events The tcxl tl sre lUrrr.ana " Maki t( 'i . if r '. ! 1 st Tsk i City !i!.:.l.;i rS, It willle fur Olyit-kIJ. - Chtty Trtrck America's Opcclcj 2003 marks th?
