Show Saturday, November 11, 2000 The Park Record A-3 City leafi CITY EDITOR: jay Hamburger 649-90 14 ext. 1 1 1 governor O Leaders to attend Deer Valley meeting by Jay Hamburger OF THE RECORD STAFF Next week. Park City will host a group of governors and governors-elect from across the country for a training conference confer-ence organized by the National Governors" Association. The gathering does not include any public events and the association predicts there will be very little policy directions direc-tions coming from the meeting. Instead, the event is meant to aid the transition of governors-elect governors-elect into their respective governors' gover-nors' mansions. "There's the human factor of transitioning into a new job." said the NGA's Peter Wiley. The meeting is scheduled for Park City largely because of Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt's past leadership position in the association. associ-ation. He is immediate past chairman of the NGA. The meeting starts on Monday and runs through Wednesday. Most of the conference will occur in Silver Lake Village. The gover-nors gover-nors and governors-elect are scheduled to attend a luge event at the Utah Olympic Park on Tuesday, though. The seminars, which run about 45 minutes to one hour each, allowing the politicians to not only trade stories about campaigns and administrations but also to focus on being a governor gov-ernor rather than a candidate. "The concept is peer learning, peer sharing of experiences," Wiley said. "We try to have a good ratio of existing governors to the new governors." He adds: "Our governors are gwrnors nlmmmkt craj to Part City Tlu'Jrt&wify nvrwrs anS -emfn-eQct arc scfuduCcJ to be in Turk City ncxty.dk for a 'Uutwnaf Qcwnim' Aaxiatwn wwYfttuf Missouri Governor -elect Bob Hoidn. Parris Glendening also touts the conference con-ference as a smart move before the governors-elect take office. "No matter how well prepared pre-pared you are to become governor, gover-nor, there are numerous questions ques-tions you have before taking office." Glendening said in a prepared statement. "NGA's seminar for new governors encourages peer learning in wide ranging and practical conversations con-versations that are beneficial to both new and veteran governors." gover-nors." The governors and governors-elect probably won't discuss dis-cuss issues in depth even though they are meeting in one of the nation's public-lands battle grounds and where the 2002 Winter Olympic will occur The NGA meeting will be the second gathering of national politicians in Park City within a few months. Earlier in the fall, a group of itaie senate presidents met in Park City for a convention. conven-tion. This meeting isnt expected to draw governors from bigger states, such as Texas Gov. George W. Bush. California Gov. Gray Davis. New York Gov. George Pataki or Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. New Jersey Gov.
