Ml Children and parents can visit their neighborhood library, pick up a registration form, and spend tune together reading their favorite books "Kl'ED-7 is committed to working with our community partners to promote literacy through our Reading Marathon.-says Marathon.-says Kl'ED General Manager Larry Smith. "We recognie that children must learn how to read well in order to achieve success later in life." This year's Marathon motivates kids to get "wild" about reading through its "Between the Lions" theme. Airing on Kl'ED weekdays at 8:3(1 a.m.. Between the Uons centers on a family of lions who live in an enchanted library where Kx4s, words and story characters magically magi-cally come to life. Set in a vanety-show vanety-show format that mixes puppets, animation and live act km with stones, sto-nes, skitv songs and guest celebrities, celebri-ties, the series offers children creative cre-ative opportunities to learn about language, phonics, vocabulary, and sentence structure. Since its PBS debut in April. "Between the Lions" has won much acclaim. It is the first television series to offer educationally vmnd reading instruction that combines phonics and w hole language. Because it helps beginning readers learn key skills that are essential to learning how to read, the National Education Association, the nation's largest teacher's organization, has endorsed the program. The NEA is also impressed at how the "Between the Lions" website offers patents and educators lessons les-sons that support learning (pbskids.org lions). In addition, the Television Critics Association has recognized "Between the Lions" for Outstanding Achievement in Children's Programming "Our planning committee selected "Between the Lions" as this year's Repdmg Marathon theme because iti a high-quality program that teaches children to read by watching television." televi-sion." says Kimberly Grabcr. Jim Pitts "Saturday's Voyeur 2(XXI" and Melissa Gessel "Saturday's Voyeur 2(100." "Hysteria" is a fascinating hybrid of theatrical elements; part farcical comedy, part psychological mystery play. The play unfolds in IW as Sigmund teud (Gene Pack), has reluctantly moved to the quiet London suburb of Hampstead to escape the Nazi's growing power in Austria. He hopes to spend his last days in peace, but fate has other plans for him. Into his house bursts Jessica ( Kristin Kahle). a young woman soaked with rain and frantic to see him. This is just the fust note in the symphony of comic and dramatic dra-matic chaos that follows. A highly eccentric (to say the least) Salvador Dah (joe Pitti) soon appears as the young lady ends up naked in the living room closet. Freud's physician. Dr. Yahuda (Tony Larimer), arrives on the scene and certainly wont understand under-stand this naked woman's pres ence. Freud is forced to run interference. inter-ference. Mistaken identity, explosions explo-sions of Dah's surrealistic visions and Freud's fever di earns (Jim Pitts and Melissa Gessel as Figments), a doctor who vehemently vehe-mently opposes Freud's latest writing writ-ing (the earth-shattering assertion that Moses was not a Jew. but an Egyptian aristocrat') and a young woman insistent that Freud revisit one of his most famous and difficult diffi-cult cases make for a lively challenge chal-lenge as the poor peace-seeking winch is a great tie in to our goal of encouraging more families to visit their neighborhood library." A study by the University of Kansas reports that television can leach children basic reading skills. Results indicate that kindergarten students who watched Between the Lions outperKmed those who did not watch the program by nearly ; four to one based on measur es of specific program content, such as letter-sound correspondence and concepts of print. To com plete the Reading Marathon; children chil-dren must read a specific amount of time for their age groups up to five hours during the two weeks. Kids w ho successfully complete the Marathon will receive a "Super Reader Certificate of Completion" and an invitation to The Mane FOB OAL $325,000 k: " - t w ym mint purgmtrvd rjm rm tmi ww ik w nit.
