J Cellular firms ringing City Hall with more submittals 0 Neighborhood opposes an application for Nextel antennae on the Main Street Mall by Jay Hamburger OF THE RECORD STAFF The telecommunications industry indus-try is continuing to busy the Park City Planning Commission. Ktonths after the first firms began taking an interest in boosting their sen ice in Park City, the city is continuing to receive applications. On Wednesday, another proposal propos-al became controversial when some neighbors complained about an application to place a facility on the Main Street Mali at 33? Main St. Nextel Communications wants to construct four panel antennae on the building. The company also asked the city to allow 264 square feet for mechanical equipment. The company says the antennae are necessary to handle the expected expect-ed increase in cellular activity as the 2(X)2 Winter Olympics approach. It wants the. upgrades functioning from July 1,2001 to March 31. 2002. The antennae would be removed after March 2002. Several people who live on upper Park Avenue, which is one block west of the Main Street Mall, complained about the application. They especially argued that the telecommunications equipment would make too much noise. Marion Lintner. an upper Park Avenue resident, said noise resonating res-onating from the site already is heard at her house. "The noise level is absolutely terrible at this point." she said. "It's 24 hours a day." She also questioned the amount of construction necessary to place the antennae. "1 cant see any positive from my point of view," she said. Other nearby residents were also worried about noise from the antennae, including one person per-son who lives on Woodside Avenue, which is two blocks from the site. Mike Guetschow, who lives at 325 Park Ave. and who is active in the I'pper Park Avenue Property Owners Association, told the Planning Commission he did not support the proposal. "It's here. We're stuck with it." Guetschow said about the Main Street Mall. "Dont make it worse." Nextel representatives listened lis-tened to the opposition and then indicated that the company would take measures to reduce the sound that comes from the site. The Planning Commission voted to continue its discussion about the application and told city staffers and Nextel to reach a compromise regarding neighborhood neighbor-hood concerns. The Planning Commission Wednesday night dealt with other issues that the telecommunications industry is facing in Park City. The city is considering an ordinance that regulates telecommunications facilities facili-ties during the Olympics. The ordi nance would allow for a staff-level review of application for telecommunications telecom-munications facilities associated with the Olympics. During a hearing about the ordinance, ordi-nance, an attorney for Voice Stream Wireless requested that cellular earners ear-ners be treated equally during the Olympics regardless of the company's compa-ny's official connection to the Olympics, such as through a sponsorship. spon-sorship. There was limited Planning Commission diseusMon about the difference between telecommunications telecommunica-tions facilities located within Salt Lake Organizing Committee-controlled venues, such as Park City Mountain Resort, Deer Valley Resort and the north end of City-Park. City-Park. The Planning Commivsion voted to continue the public hearing about the Olympic ordinance. Racquet Club pool: no solution found by Jay Hamburger OF THE RECORD STAFF The disagreement between the city and a group of swimmers ov er the closing of the Racquet Club pool for the winter continued Thursday night. As a cost-cutting measure, the Leisure Services Department wants to close the pool from December to February. The department says it could save $13,500 in heating costs, chemicals and lifeguard salaries. Some swimmers, though, say they want to use the pool through the winter. At Thursdays Park City Council meeting, the city and the swimmers continued their talks about keeping the pool open. The swimmers claimed they would help out by raising rais-ing money to keep the pool open but the city was not completely sold. Particularly, City Councilman Fred Jones told the swimmers that the city s budget w as balanced earlier earli-er in the year through cuts and he did not want to revisit that process, j "1 donl think we can start gi ing! up on lhisc savings. They w ere real. They were needed," Jones said. " . ! Jones indicated he was willing to experiment with a financial arrangement arrange-ment between the swimmers and the city, such as including a month-to-month rev iew on the pool's numbers. num-bers. The swimmers axed that idea, though. A decision abtnit the pool's winter win-ter operations was not made Thursday night.
