We left in time with the threat of snow and the settling in of winter. We had been in Ca(x San Lucas in the spring and decided to use our time-share at the end of October. I wondered if I would enjoy 10 days there. Our two-bedroom unit was at the Fiesta Americana Grand Los Cabos located in the Cabo del Sol area, about 10 minutes from the heart of Cabo San Lucas. It was situated on the fourth floor, perched on rocky cliffs with light 'lue surf washing on the shore below our balconies, with views that extended as far as we could see. This w as our fourth trip to Cabo. and 1 had several goals. The first and foremost was to do nothing, and secondly, sec-ondly, to do some exploring outside of the area. I also wanted to see what grocery shopping would be like and what was available, and whether we could do with a car for only a ample of days After finding groceries in a very nice store in downtown Cabo San Lucas, and after the arrival of my sister, sis-ter, we settled into a ruce routine of doing nothing. Sitting out under the umbrellas, swimming, reading, occasional occa-sional walks, watching the breathtaking breathtak-ing views and activities on the ocean seemed to take up most of the day. After several days of this we decided to rent a car and make a loop to La Paz and back. We started our trek early one morning and took Hwy 1 from Cabo San Lucas and went north towards Todos Santos. This followed beautiful beauti-ful verdant colorful terrain along the Pacific Coast side of the peninsula. About 50 minutes north of Cabo we arrived at Todos Santos. The town was founded in 1734 by the Jesuits and destroyed by Indians a couple of y ears later. It is a laid back little town with a pleasant main pica, lovely old bnck and stucco buildings and some fine galleries and shops. After a great breakfast we headed north about an hour and a half further where we arrived in La Paz. It s the capital of Ba)a California and is W&A&i 1 i&ri hi 5D mi 1 k VK ill tin I ,tgwg "1 E3?. After a short stop and exploration of the pier and bay. we headed south towards Cabo San Lucas, but instead of taking the same route we headed east througn the mountain range to the Sea of Cortez. This was a very winding road, but picturesque. We arrived at a beautiful bay and town called Los Barriles. We continued south to the beautifuL well-preserved town of San Jose del Cabo. The proportions were huge. We arrived back to our hotel early evening tired, but we thoroughly thor-oughly enjoyed the day trip. After several days of .relaxing we decided to end the week with an ATV tour at Desert Park. We had heard great reviews about this eco-kgical eco-kgical tour and decided w e would do it. Desert Park ts located at the Cabo Real Resort and encompasses 50,110 acres of natural reserve. The touis Q23 ) 3 i . -V . ' -".-. ' ' , . are led by Antonio Rodriguez Mateos. After being fitted with our helmets, bandana and p'iggles. and a short introduction to our ATVs. we were ready for our three hour guided tour of desert. We climbed to 2UU feet towards the mountain range where we saw panoramic views of the blue Sea of Cortez framed against the Baja Desert. Desert Park has a 25 miles of trails through the ecokgical reserve, a network of connecting trails crossing arrovos. traversing mountains and narrow canyons. Trails were well marked and were completely away from public roads. The speeds were kept low and we had many stops to see the desert ecosystem and kam more about the flora and fauna of Los Cahos. The cacti were in bloom and lots of cokr everywhere. Antonio was knowledgeable knowl-edgeable about the land and history and showed his experience as a tour guxle. Most evenings we would take a taxi into Cabo San Lucas and would have dinner.
