The sales tax levied on lift tickets in Utah is higher than that of most Rocky Mountain states, including Idaho, Wyoming, and Nevada. Some other states, including Colorado, don't tax lift tickets at all. The Utah Ski Association has fought to have lift tickets exempted from state sales tax for some time, according to Mark Menlove, the association's president. State sales taxes currently amount to 4.875 percent, in addition to any county or municipal taxes. Some ski resorts, such as Park City Ski Area, would like to see all sales taxes removed from lift tickets. "We're 7-14 percent behind before we even start competing with other states," says Park City Ski Area President and General Manager Phil Jones. "We'd like to see that (tax) all eliminated." In order to do that, the resort routinely spends more than ' $1 million per year on snowmaking, and shouldn't also have to share its lift ticket revenue with the city. However, for other resorts, the municipal portion of the tax is essential. For instance, most of Alta's revenue comes from its 34 percent share of the sales tax on lift tickets. Town services would cease to function without it. But even Alta town officials agree that the state levy is a big burden as Utah resorts compete with neighboring states for tourists. Eliminating the state tax would mean either lower lift prices at Utah resorts, increased out-of-state advertising, or both, said Menlove. The net result would be more skiers coming to Utah, which would benefit everyone. Menlove said the Utah Ski Association will continue to lobby the Utah Legislature to exempt lift tickets from state taxes. However, any attempt to eliminate municipal or county levies would have to take place unilaterally, Menlove added. Not only does cycling put less stress on the knees, but it helps build the quadriceps to lower rate.
