Since Jeremy teachers, like all the other teachers in the district, will be able to E-mail each other, "There is no more paper waste," said McBride. Unlike Parley's, McBride notes fewer apprehensive teachers. "Everybody is excited," she said. At Treasure Mountain Middle School the "Smartlab" by Creative Learning Systems, Inc. is currently current-ly being installed. It resembles something that should belong somewhere in the future with separate sep-arate work stations that are integrated inte-grated through a computer network. net-work. Large red and blue signs identify identi-fy each station which include such areas as robotics, computer-aided manufacturing, satellite technology, technolo-gy, rocketry, aerodynamic testing, hydroponics, . superconductivity, space-frame construction and computer-assisted publishing. For the high school things have been slow in coming. After Senate Bill 254 made it necessary for voters vot-ers to reapprove . the bond last June, the computers arrived later than the district would have liked. According to Technology Specialist Cherice Weeks everybody every-body is excited, even though there are boxes everywhere. "They're all going 'ooooh, 'ooooh," Weeks said, referring to the strange sounds students make when they see new equipment. The science and math classes have new Texas Instruments graphing calculators, the commu nication department has video editing, and one classroom will be teaching business communication where there will be an IBM lab and will function similar to a business. busi-ness. Hopefully, within the next couple cou-ple of weeks the high school will have Internet access via a T-l fiberoptic line. Once that happens, the other schools in the district will follow. Superintendent Dr. Don Fielder said the Park City School District is definitely not leading the pack in Utah as-IarasJechnology is concerned, since several other districts dis-tricts have had E-mail and Internet access for years. "We had our priorities," pri-orities," Fielder said. "First we had to keep pupilteacher ratios low. And second, sec-ond, we had to raise salaries, although still not high enough, to attract quality teachers." Fielder went on to say that with the 10-year voted leeway technology technol-ogy plan, Park City will eventually catch and exceed the rest of the districts in Utah.
