The first performance of the Park West summer series was changed 24 hours prior to the show to the Delta Center. A place Taylor joked "reminds me of my living room, a lot, especially the furniture." And as he progressed and acknowledged this was hardly the star-filled night promised, he dedicated one of his songs, waving to his fans high up in the center to "all of you sitting up on the lawn." Taylor took to the stage with no fanfare or fancy introduction. In fact, with no introduction at all, picked up his guitar and started "Sweet Baby James," in a single spotlight. He was joined by two men and two women backing him up on "I Feel Fine," and by the time he hit "That's Why I'm Here," two more guitars and a two drummers had joined him. So had the audience and much of the show became the kind of sing along around the fire some folks had been doing for twenty years with Taylor's music. He did some songs from his new album which he said sounded like some of his old stuff but was technically better. "Copperline" Incongruity takes away from from PLAY on C3 Mullaney works himself into a stupor before the show, coming on stage as a fretful, spent young (but aging) man. His wife has died, and he's just returned from a trip to Europe-where he has seen many of the places they enjoyed together. Mullaney's anguish is plainly evident His apartment-obviously once meticulously maintained- Put A Coral Reef MAKE A STATEMENT u STAND OUT FROM Commercial Residential Salt Water Aquariums Set-up and Maintenance Great For Bars. But the audience responded best to the music they knew by heart and when he moved into the broken-hearted woman's anthem, "Handy Man" the center was reverberating with the refrain. "Fire and Rain" the song my friend said was about the crazy house (I never knew thatl took the show into intermission. The second half of the concert was even better. He began by talking about his father, a formal man, a man of research who would, on the first of May recite a little poem. "Hooray, hooray, the first of May, Outdoor F g starts today." Taylor said his dad would then return to his study and be serious fqr.another year. Then he launched into a spirited "First of May" rendition where he did a kind of Air Jordan spring-loaded moonwalk. Through out the show Taylor was jumping around and dancing on stage and clearly enjoying his audience (I mean he said we were better than Denver and we worked hard to live up to that honor.) The bass of backup vocalist, Arnold McCuller took over for a bluesy solo with " Is that the way you really look?" and Taylor sang backup for him. The energy went up and crowd took to dancing in the aisles with the salsa beat of "Oh Mexico" where the talents of music director and piano player Don Grolnick got a chance to shine. Almost all night the fancy changing lights seemed like a distraction to the mellow tempo of Taylor's music. But the welcomes him with old food and the smell of gas. Without his doting brother Leo, he could easily curl up in a corner and not come out. But Leo conspires with Faye to introduce George to Jenny, who's just been divorced. Jenny is Polly Purepred; she's trim and neat, she doesn't curse or drink much (except, much to George's dismay, on airplanes); and when she leaves In Park Citv YOUR COMPETITORS ana Menial units 649-5174 csJ X! raspberry colors bars that resembled a fire exit grate seemed just right for "On the Roof." And at the precise moment where Taylor sang " at night the stars put on a show for free" the back curtain became a night time sky of hundreds of twinkling lights then the lighting added something. But during "Your Smiling Face" the floor pattern changed to giant bright cubes with black lines between that somehow resembled a rubic cube being worked by a hyper child. The first ending was vintage Taylor with "Shower the People" (you love with love) but there was no way the crowd was letting him go. He returned to "How Sweet It Is" and he shook hands with the crowd who had worked their way up to the stage front. The second encore was one of those songs fans had waited all night for, the testament to loyalty, "You've Got A Friend." And it appeared the show was over. In fact, a lot of folks left. But Taylor was no more ready to leave than the crowd was to have him go. He came back and sang the sweet lilting folksong "For Wild Mountain Thyme." It was pretty and sad-the perfect ending to a Sweet Baby James show. The next concert in the series, weather permitting, at ParkWest will be Color Me Badd on June 25. All tickets will be available at SmithTix, King Kong in Park City and ParkWest the day of the show. good show her apartment, she sees that it's taken care of. It's essentially up to Jenny to drag George out of his slump-but, unfortunately, Mullaney seems to have dredged himself in too deeply. There are quite a few times when it appears Mullaney just can't drag his character out of dispair. The effect can be somewhat disconcerting, especially given Jenny's attention. McQuay's Jenny is just like the girl every man is supposed to want to replace mom. If Frued could have treated George he would have said "Marry one of these and call me in the morning." The explanation for the bit of incongruity between the two couples may lie with director Dian Henderson. A typecast "spunky" actress herself, Henderson's style is perfect for creating characters like Jenny. However, it may be her effervescence which has added just see PLAY on C5 American Heart Association |
