The children's section of the new theater at Sundance Institute and the Sundance Children's Theatre. "The Sundance Children's Theatre is in a unique position to create a new body of American children's literature for the stage and screen something to supplement the classics, to give kids relevant new works that speak to issues and challenges that concern them." The Sundance Children's Theatre was established in 1990 to commission, develop and produce contemporary new plays and musicals for young audiences. This program encourages stage and screenwriters to create body of children's literature for generations to come. In addition to The Adventures ofPor Quinly, the 1992 season will also feature The Right Self, written by Jerry Patch with music by Diane King. The Children's Theatre at Sundance will perform Thursdays atll a.m. and Fridays and Saturdays at 11a.m. and 6 p.m. Sundance is located past Heber, down highway 189 in Provo Canyon. For reservations and information, call 225-4100. Sundance will open its new outdoor theatre with a celebration and dedication June 27; the evening will also feature the opening shows of two performances The Adventures of Por Quinly, for children, and Li' I Abner, on the main stage. The new million-dollar theater facility was designed by Jack Bogan of the theatre design firm Landry and Bogan. Jack Bogan is known for his work on the Randall Jones Theatre at the Utah Shakespearean Festival and the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego. Bogan designed the new Sundance facility to provide flexibility for different stage productions, improved guest services, and an appearance that blends with the surrounding environment. "The opening of the new Summer Theatre is a milestone in our history making permanent our dream to bring art and nature together for the enjoyment of all." said Robert Redford. The old theater, which was in the same spot, had accomplished that already; below Mt. Timpanogos, and nestled in tall pine trees, the stage has always been a rustic experience. And the new stage won't give up that feel. Using cedar, pine and indigenous stone, workers are constructing a stage and terraced seating to match the environment. Features of the new theatre include two stages, the main stage with seating for 1,200 used for Summer Theatre productions and a smaller stage with a more intimate atmosphere seating 250 for children's Theatre productions; new bench and lawn seating terraced for better views of the stage; new restroom and concession facilities; a picnic area nestled streamside in the pines behind the theatre; improved lighting and sound; a suspended floor specifically designed for dance, and sub-stage dressing rooms, costuming rooms, and scenery areas. Inaugurating the new theatre will be an expanded 1992 Sundance Summer Theatre season featuring four plays in repertory. Carousel and Li' I Abner will alternate nights on the Eccles Main Stage, while the Sundance Children's Theatre will present The Adventures of Por Quinly and The Right Self, on the King Stage. Sundance Summer Theatre shows begin June 27 and run through August 5.
