Show Conserve water now to avoid future rationing by Stephen Poe USU Energy Specialist Many parts of Utah are now in their sixth year of drought. Salt Lake City reports a possibility of water rationing by the end of the summer. A dripping taucet can waste more than 600 gallons of water a month; a leaky toilet can waste 3,000 gallons. It's not hard to see that conserving water will conserve natural resources (energy) and save you money. In saving water, beat in mind that 75 percent of your indoor water is used in the bathroom, 25 percent is used in the kitchen and for laundry, and only 5 percent is used for drinking. With values like these, it makes sense to regularly check in the bath, kitchen and laundry for potential savings. We can delay the pain of having someone else tell us when and how to use our water if we start conserving now. Bathroom- Avoid leaving the water running for shaving, washing or brushing your teeth. This can save you 10 gallons per person per day. Fill the bathtub only 13 to 12 full. Limit showers to five minutes and turn off the water while soaping down. Main Bountiful 298-3417 water-saving toilets and devices. Use flow-reducers for showers and sinks. Kitchen- Use the dishwasher for full loads only. Dishwashers use 15 to 25 gallons per washing. Avoid leaving the water running while rinsing dishes. Instead, fill the sink for washing and rinsing operations. Store water in the refrigerator for drinking instead of running the tap to get cold water. Rinse vegetables in a sink full of water rather than leaving the tap to run. Laundry- When washing, do full loads and avoid extra pre-soak and rinsing cycles if possible. Control the load level to reflect the amount of water actually needed. Educate your children (or spouse) about the laundry process. Help them learn to put away clothes that are still clean, rather than throwing everything in the dirty laundry. Maintenance Get on those small leaks right away. Put new fixtures in or replace washers. To see if your toilet is leaking internally, put some food coloring in the tank. If you see the color appear in the bowl after several minutes, you need to replace the flapper in the tank.
