Show Thursday, June 19, 2008 Hatch lambastes Democrats, enviromental elitists for hi$i gas prices Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) (R-Utah) has accused Democrats Demo-crats of adopting the anti-oil anti-oil agenda of environmental environmen-tal elitists as an element of their own energy policy. Speaking on the Senate Sen-ate floor, Hatch said the Democratic leadership in Congress doesn't seem to understand that the greater the supply of oil, the lower the prices. So instead" of boosting domestic do-mestic production and lowering prices and the nation's dependency on foreign oil, he added, Democrats investigate oil futures, ban Canadian oil imports and delay the commercial production of oil shale. "The poorest American spends about 50 percent of their income on energy, ener-gy, and not enough is said about that," Hatch said. "The sad thing is that the poor look to liberals to make their national policies poli-cies for them, but in this case they're being sold out." Hatch further took liberal lib-eral members of the Majority Ma-jority party to task for stalling the commercial development of oil shale. "We have as much oil in oil shale in Utah, Colorado, Colo-rado, and Wyoming as the rest of the world combined," com-bined," Hatch said. "We have a federal law that layers on every available environmental protection protec-tion but also would allow companies to develop this resource, that's ten times richer in oil than a normal oil well. So what do the liberals do? They put a ilitl.;; til So there you are sitting your dog frolicking to and fro when all of the sudden he stops, drops and rolls. Of course he comes over to you for some affection and you realize by the smell that he has just rolled in something you'd prefer he hadn't. There are reasons a dog might do this, some dating back to a pack mentality but you just don't want your dog smelling like the pack. The best thing is to try to change the behavior by telling him "No!" and distracting distract-ing him from the action. But if you don't get him to stop quickly enough, give your dog a bath immediately. Use a brush during the shampoo phase and work out the smell. Use of a citronella shampoo is great at getting out undesirable smells. If you can't bathe your dog right away, sprinkle some baking soda on the spot, rub it in and then brush it out. Baking soda will absorb the odor. There are also some great neutralizing products available from your vet or from a pet store. You may not be able to stop him from behaving like he's part of a pack of wild animals but you might be able to get rid of the wild animal smell. 410 South 450 West SpringviUe, Utah 84663 801-489-9676 DOG & CAT When you're out of town, rest assured your pet is having a good time with us! Some on the other side say they don't want it to happen too fast. "Well I congratulate them, because the existing law, which I sponsored, makes is abundantly clear that each governor gets to decide how quickly quick-ly development should move forward in their respective re-spective states, and they know that," the senator added. "What they're really re-ally doing is making sure the governor of Utah never nev-er gets a chance to make that decision. So now we have companies that have spent tens of millions of dollars in good faith, and they're just plain getting shut down. How are they supposed to go out and attract investors when Congress is acting to stop regulations for commercial commer-cial leases?" SPRINGVILLE HERALD Teddy Anderson greets Utah's skin cancer rate is 'sky' high With a skin cancer rate among the 10 highest in the nation, Utah health officials of-ficials are urging residents to take steps to keep their skin safe. Utah Department Depart-ment of Health (UDOH) data show that the rate of melanoma the deadliest form of skin cancer is increasing. In 2005, 554 Utahns were diagnosed with melanoma, up from 494 in 2004. Every year, melanoma kills an average aver-age of 63 Utah residents. The good news is that skin cancer is preventable when sun protection measures mea-sures are used consistently. consistent-ly. UDOH and the Utah' Cancer Action Network (UCAN) recommend: 1) Applying sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher 30 minutes before spending time outdoors and reapply reap-ply every two hours; 2) Covering up by wearing wear-ing hats, long sleeves and sunglasses; 3) Avoiding the sun between be-tween 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when you are most likely to be exposed to the ultra violet rays that damage and age your skin; and 4) Seeking shade when you can't avoid the sun. "As summer begins, we're all going to be outside out-side more working and playing," said Kalynn Fil-ion, Fil-ion, health program specialist, spe-cialist, UDOH. "We need to make sunscreen a part of our daily routines, and combine it with at least one other sun protection measure for maximum effectiveness. ef-fectiveness. And, remember remem-ber that even on cloudy days, the sun's ultraviolet ultravio-let rays burn through the cloud cover and can damage your skin," Filion added. The melanoma rate has been climbing in the U.S. since the 1970s. Data Da-ta from the Centers for Disease Control and prevention pre-vention show the overall over-all U.S. melanoma rate is 17 per 100,000 persons, while Utah's rate is 25 per 100,000. The District of Columbia has the lowest incidence at just over 5 per 100,000. Other states with high rates include Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Vermont, and New Hampshire. The ACS estimates es-timates that in Utah, 65 to 90 percent of melanomas are caused by the sun's ultraviolet ul-traviolet rays. In addition, more than one million cases of basal and squamous cell skin cancers, most of which are highly curable, occur each year across the nation, na-tion, making skin cancer the most diagnosed form of malignancy. Utahns are at higher risk for skin cancer due to the state's high elevation, eleva-tion, predominantly fair-complexioried fair-complexioried population, and frequent sunny days.
