WASHINGTON America's Ameri-ca's obesity epidemic and global glob-al warming might not seem to have much in common. But public health experts suggest people can attack them both by cutting calories and carbon dioxide at the same time. How? Get out of your car and walk or bike half an hour a day instead of driving. And while you're at it, eat less red meat. That's how Americans can simultaneously save the planet and their health. The payoffs are huge, al-though al-though unlikely tohappea One numbers-crunching scientist calculates that if all Americans between 10 and 74 walked just half an hour a day instead of driving, they would cut the annual an-nual U.S. emissions of carbon dioxide, the chief greenhouse gas, by 64 million tons. We could look at my awful kids, but they know where I live and yours don't. I hope. Do you find you still love them even when they are just driving you crazy? Are you embarrassed by that? Sometimes I wonder if I just have no standards because I always come back to thinking they're wonderful even after one of those moments .. you know, those moments when someone asks how they're doing and you just cringe inside. Do you say, "At the moment, not too hot;" or do you smile wanly and say they're just fine. I guess it depends on who's doing the asking. Was I an awful parent? Am I one now? Oh my gosh, it's sooo personal. I wonder sometimes how any of us make it through parenting at all, and some times I wonder why do we bother. When I think of my daughter, whose many criticisms of me include A) the fact that I don't recycle re-cycle enough, and B) I eat at fast food restaurants AND I eat standing up or in the car, I wonder what her kids will think of her one day. nnrnnn Expires June 30, 2008 - JT705 u II OFF ; GOOLAIIT OR i Tnaiii FLUSH Expires June 30, 2008 -JT704 tion please call 4894390. Grace Bible Pastor Derrick Smothers invites in-vites you to join them on Sunday at 10 a.m. at Grace Bible Church for a time of worship and teaching from the Word of God. Pastor Ben will be there for Mission's Sunday. Grace Bible Church is a non-denominational church and you are invited in-vited to come worship Mainly, I try not to think too much about how I treated my parents when I was younger. It's the chronic condition of youth to be completely self -involved. No wait, it's the chronic condition of life to be self-involved some of the time, but when you're young, it's almost all of the time. However, when you're older you've gone through another important cringe-worthy cringe-worthy moment, the moment mo-ment when you realize that not only does no one think you look fat in that dress, no one even cares what you're wearing. It's depressing to realize that, but somehow a relief when it comes. But if young people weren't self-involved, they'd never break away from the herd. We'd just all follow one set of old people down into the grave thinking we heed to take care of them forever. for-ever. Selfishness is, in its way, the saving grace of youth. It gives you the confidence to think you're smarter than your parents and that you'll do a better job. If you didn't think you were capable of doing more and showing show-ing them, why wouldn't you stay home where the fridge is always full? The challenge for me has always been not taking tak-ing my kids too personal-. ly: not their triumphs, not their failures. It just can't possibly be all my fault, I'm not that organized. The main reason for not taking your kids personally person-ally is that too much self-involvement self-involvement leads us to over-estimate the seriousness serious-ness of anything involving involv-ing ourselves. The main problem is going to be me, in other words. If everything every-thing that my kids do is my fault, well, dang, I'm going to put the best face on it that I can. I'm not going to ever tell anyone the truth about anything. Failures are going to be too horrible, triumphs are going to be a bigger deal k .... Of course, what everyone every-one really needs is a parent par-ent who's quick to point out abject failure. But it happens more often when parents identify too strongly with their kids. If the things they do are not so personal to you, it's easier to be frank and realistic. It's easier to see that "failure is fatal and success isn't final," as somebody once said. The great thing about parenting is that it's like the ocean, the tide goes in and out. Skills come and go. Sometimes you're the bug, sometimes you're the windshield. Only in parenting you'd rather be that little busy bee out there happily pollinating your child's little mind than the big bad windshield wind-shield that crushed all their hopes and dreams. I am seriously probably so much more shallow than you are, but when I was 16, if my mom would have died, I would have been more concerned about whether or not my friends all came to the funeral and if I looked cool being sad. Sure, I would have probably woken up the next day and said, "Whoa, there's no breakfast, mom must have died." But I was so sure of my personal desirability desir-ability I would have just made some toast and figured fig-ured someone else would come along to love me by the time I got home from school. My mom wasn't always there for me in the perfect way I thought she should have been, which gave me a wonderful ground for many fabulous hours of self-pity, but her failures, fail-ures, if they were failures, fail-ures, gave me a chance to develop resilience. Hopefully Hope-fully my kids will also realize how lucky they were that I was often too busy for them and notice how much they can do for themselves because of it. At least that's my strategy strat-egy for right now. n -Imn't 801-798-7343 Call for a quick quote! 199 N.
