I am still trying and my parents have been parents for more than 50 years! I know I am not a teenage girl anymore but I really enjoyed reading read-ing this funny family instruction in-struction manual. It gave me lots of great ideas which I could have used with my teenagers r 10 years ago. Too late now, they are married and the complete responsibility of their spouses. Sarah O'Leary Burning-ham Burning-ham has written a witty book that you .can't resist reading out loud. It would be another entertaining book for the family summer sum-mer road trip this year. One of the great things about this book is that it can generate conversation between parents and teens. If you disagree with Sarah's Sar-ah's negotiation technique, com? up with one you can use in your own relationship. relation-ship. The basic premise is that teens would get through their difficult years if they could learn to negotiate like a pro with their parents. Burningham explains that "ParentSpeak" includes phrases like "Because I said so" and "You'll thank me later" which as we all know came from our own parents, passed down with the reverence due all family fam-ily heirlooms. My own mother, whose name is Anne, had a list of what we now endearingly call Annegrams, which included the ever popular "Don't get your nose out of joint". Now what in the world do parents really mean when they use these terms? As Burningham explains, ex-plains, "Sometimes talking talk-ing to your parents is like being on a study abroad program. You'll be in the middle of a normal con-versation,,and con-versation,,and then BAM! "'"'IPl1 ""'!! ----III- ".MM II II I .' y - Imimnmiri MWrr.lWMrfiiirrriitiriniw-itit.iriraMiiti Debbie Balzotti Your parents pull out some random phrase that makes absolutely no sense and expect you to understand the hidden meaning." This book is like a guide book with translation footnotes for teens. The pick-up-and-read format consisting of short chapters with titles including: in-cluding: "When the Clock Strikes-Curfew" and The Road to Freedom-Your Driver's License' offers practical advice and humorous hu-morous observations by the author and others. The illustrations add to the general lighthearted treatment of some serious teen and parent concerns and keep a teenage girl engaged en-gaged in the reading. I know it is too late for me, and definitely too late for my parents who are now great -grandparents (and they really are great) but if it isn't too late for you as a teenage girl or the parent par-ent of teenagers, read this book. Raising your parents is a lifetime commitment, so you might as well have fun with it. The creative person is both more primitive and more cultivated, more destructive, de-structive, a lot madder and a lot saner, than the average aver-age person. - Frank Barron LIBRARY zOPENING 7 UNIVERSITY CELEBRATION $ sponsors LIBRARY RIBBON CUTTING Ism nbvh: Mfltonfo CMS As we head toward July and fireworks season, I am reminded that every year I treat individuals with eye injuries due to fireworks. Prevent Blindness America statistics show that in 2006 (the last year data was available) 6,400 people were treated in hospital emergency emergen-cy rooms in the one month period surrounding the 4th of July. The eyes were the second most commonly injured in-jured body part with 1,500 injuries during the same one month period. Some of the eye injuries from fireworks can be limited lim-ited to a painful burn and others are vision threatening. threat-ening. Be especially careful care-ful with sparklers and anything that may spray sparks. Fireworks that are illegal in Utah carry the greater risks of serious eye injury. Spectators seem to get injured almost as often as those lighting the fireworks. fire-works. Please use good common sense and safety rules to keep everyone safe during the upcoming fireworks fire-works season.
