The Board of Big Game Control, Utah's unique big game management system, met recently , and established t regulations governing the 1976 big game seasons. 1, The 1976 regulations were established following statewide public meetings in which the board listened to public sentiments sen-timents and observatons. Prior to the public meetings, biologically based data was submitted to the board in the form of recommendations from a ' Todd Skabelund received his Duty to God Award in the Seventh Ward Sacrament meeting Sunday, August 22. The 16 year old recipient is the soii of Mr. and Mrs. Paul H. Skabelund and is an Eagle Scout having received that rank as a member of the McCall, Idaho LDS Ward. He moved to Springville about one year ago. Todd has spent the past three summers working as junior staff member for the High Adventure Ad-venture Camp program of Ore-Ida Council, Boy Scouts of America. The board established some seven-day seasons in specified areas after careful consideration con-sideration of biological recommendations and the input of sportsmen, cattlemen, woolgrowers, land owners and other private concerns. Dec In general the board established a one-man-one-deer policy for the buck only season. General deer season in Utah will open October 23 and remain open through November 2 (11 days). In 12 areas, however, there will be seven-day hunts conducted from October 23-29. Three hundred (300) hunter's choice control permits will be available and a possible 450 postseason antlerless control permits were proposed. Both archery and muz-zleloader muz-zleloader enthusiasts will hunt deer from August 21 through September 6. Muzzleloaders will be restricted to hunting in four specified areas. Buck only is the rule again. Other big game The general open bull elk season will be open from September 29 to October 17. Fifty archery hunter's choice permits were also made available this year. Pronghorn antelope may be hunted during 1976 from September Sep-tember 4 through September 12 in all but the Box Elder unit. The Box Elder unit hunt is set for September 11-19. A total of 230 permits will be available to resident hunters. Bull moose will be legal game for the 60 permittees who draw. Season dates are set for September Sep-tember 11-26. As in years past, only limited buffalo permits will be issued. This year, ten hunter's choice permits will be drawn for the once-in-a-lifetime hunt held in the Henry Mountains. Resident hunters only may apply. Bighorn sheep will be legal to ' those who draw the ten available permits. The San Juan County hunt will allow the taking of mature rams from September 18-October 3. Deer exceptions Exceptions to the 11-day deer season were established in 12 deer herd units throughout the state. Each unit will have 100 permits available. Herd units 7, 8 and 9 (Ogden River, East Cnayon-Morgan County portion, and Davis County, respectively) will hold the hunter's choice, regular season control hunts. Permits for these hunts will be sold at the division office in Ogden. Permits will cost $5 for residents and $7 for nonresident hunters.' Applications may be made in person or by mail at the Ogden office before 5 p.m. Aug. 20 a public drawing will be held Aug. 27. Those purchasing pur-chasing a control permit may not possess other archery, muzzleloader or control permits. Four units will possible hold postseason five-day notice hunts, depending on local deer herd conditions. These permits will allow the taking of antlerless an-tlerless deer in herd units 2, 5, 6 and 8 (Cache, Rich County Portion; Woodruff Crawford Mountain part; a part of Lost Creek and a portion of East Canyon). Applications for the five-day notice hunts will not by accepted before November 3, 1976. Applications Ap-plications should be submitted to the Salt Lake office. Costs are the same as above. Primitive weapons season The August 21-September 6 primitive weapons season includes in-cludes both archery and muzzleloader muz-zleloader hunts. Bow and arrow hunting is open statewide during the season while muzzleloaders are restricted to part of Box Elder (herd unit 1), the High Uinta Primitive Area (part of units 22, 23B and 24. North and South Boulder (herd units 51A and 51 B). In a change from last year's regulations, the Board of Big Game Control ruled that archers would be eligible for only one ' deer during the 1976 season. Archery permits may be purchased pur-chased from any authorized license agent upon personal application only. Both archery and muzzleloader permits may be purchases by mail or personal per-sonal application at any division office. Permits go on sale July 28 and continue through September 6. Archery permits will cost $5 for both residents and nonresidents. Muzzleloader permits will cost $5 for residents and $7 for nonresidents. Other Season Details Elk-Open bull elk permits may be purchased in person or by mailed applicaion July 26-August6, 26-August6, 1976, at any division of Wildlife Resources office. The $15 permit fee must accompany the application. Fifty hunter's choice archery permits will be issued for open bull elk areas. Application dates are the same as above. The elk archery season for the 50 permittees per-mittees will be August 21-September 21-September 6 and will be held in all open bull areas. The 50 hunter's choice permits will be drawn from all archery elk permits purchased. The restricted elk seasons will be held at various dates in specified elk herd units. Call BLAINE R.
