Dictionary trip changes couple's perspective By Steven R. Wallis Express Editor Last November Russ and Cindy Perry of Vernal went to the isolated Havasupai Indian Reservation to deliver 48 dictionaries, dic-tionaries, but they came home with more than they left. The Havasupai live on the western end of the Grand Canyon. To access the village where the Havasupai live, the Perrys drove to the end of the highway and hiked 8 miles into the canyon. Each of their packs were loaded with 24 dictionaries dictionar-ies and personal gear. Visitors to the area are expected to pack in all their food and water and to haul out their trash. The only access to the village is on foot, horseback or helicopter. The dictionaries were donated donat-ed by the Vernal Rotary Club. Cindy is a past president. Russ is an active Rotarian, and former for-mer tour guide and bus driver in the Grand Canyon area. The Vernal Rotary annually provides pro-vides dictionaries to all third graders in Uintah, Duchesne and Daggett counties. This year the Perrys requested 48 additional dictionaries to take to the Havasupai. "We tried to be humble, but we couldn't help thinking we were heroes, great us, but .... a . w.wr: . Many of the residents make daily horse pack trips to the top of the canyon can-yon and back. "For the most part the people in the village are not friendly," Perry said. "They don't like us there, but they need us because they depend on tourism." At the small school which is K-12, the children fell in love with Cindy, Russ said. The children chil-dren were a little somber the day the Perrys arrived because one of the students had committed com-mitted suicide and a couple of the teachers had not reported back to the school after a helicopter heli-copter trip. "Our timing couldn't have been worse, but the students were grateful for the dictionaries," dictionar-ies," Perry said. Havasupai translates to in English. There is a store, cafe, museum, a church and a lodge in the village. The blue-green water flows in Havasu Creek which gets its color from the calcium carbonate car-bonate in the soil. The blue-green water from Havasu Creeks cascades over three major waterfalls: Navajo (located 1 12 miles from the village), Havasu (another 12 mile) and Mooney Falls (2 miles). The water temperature remains at about 70 degree s throughout the year. Its high mineral content and carbonate carbon-ate precipitate account for the pools an natural dams around the waterfall. Several years ago floods destroyed many of these natural dam, but gradually gradu-ally they are being reformed. The Havasupai Tribe does not permit its people to use alcoholic beverages on the reservation res-ervation and drugs are as illegal ille-gal in Havasu Canyon as they are anywhere else. Tribal law does not permit the bearing of firearms by anyone on the reservation, nor are machetes either necessary or useful in the campgrounds. Due to the large number of animals living in Havasu Canyon, the Tribe requests visitors not to bring pets with them. "The trip raised our awareness aware-ness and changed our perspec tive," Cindy said. Perry noted that the people of the village are very resourceful resource-ful and proud of the beautiful areas where they live. "There are two stone pillars which oversee the village, ' Russ said. "Legend says that if the pillars fall, the Havasu will cease to exist. I hope that never happens." ALLftwO.
