Ann Murray jnen six-year-old Austyn Murray (below) developed cellulitis, an acute inflammation of the connective tissue of the skin, his physician ordered a routine CT-Scan to be performed at Ashley Valley Medical Center. Part of the exam involved swallowing an iodine contrast. "Within seconds of taking the iodine, Austyn started to sneeze," remembers Ann Murray (top), Austyn s mother. "Alan Batty (center), the radiology technician, immediately recognized something was wrong." "I knew he was having an allergic reac tion," says Alan. "We gave him Benedryl and got him to the Emergency Room in less than two minutes. By that time, Austyn was wheezing wheez-ing and having great difficulty dif-ficulty breathing. He was starting to panic. The ER staff did a great job to stabilize him" "We had no idea that Austyn was allergic to iodine," says Ann. "Before this, he loved to eat shrimp and lobster and shellfish. If Alan hadn't been so aware of the situation, I know my child wouldn't be with us today The nurses were amazing during Austyn s stay. And Alan came by several times to check on Austyn. He sat down and talked to us about what happened and made sure we knew that Austyn should never take another contrast" medium, even if it's not iodine." Today, Austyn is back to being a healthy six-year-old boy. "I've always had a positive experience at this hospital," says Ann. "But what I'm really thankful for is that they saved my son's life."
