Tan said the reward of "A Rented Christmas" is character development. * "1 love watching the actors, who start with printed words on a page, develop and turn these words into characters who are real and breathing things," he said. "The characters interact and have lives and histories and futures. They're on stage for that short period of time where all of that is reflected in their lines and actions." As a director. Tan said getting everyone together for rehearsals is a juggling act. "This is somewhat of a community production/' he said. "So you have the logistical challenges of schedules during a busy time of year. But once we get the actors together and the energy starts to develop, it's so enjoyable. I could do that all the time." Tan also said his experience directing different types of performances has prepared him for "A Rented Christmas." "My background is directing 'The Park City Follies/ and it's a completely different kind of production," he said. "The Follies' is a throwntogether production. And people have told me if I can herd those cats, I can do a fullblown production like this." The Egyptian Theatre Company will present "A Rented Christmas," at the Egyptian Theatre, 32S Main Street, starting Friday Dec. 10, through Thursday Dec. 23. ShowTime Monday through Saturday is 7:30 p.m., with 2 p.m. matinees ever)' Saturday. Sunday performances begin at 6 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children ages 12 and younger. They can be purchased by calling 649-9371 or on the web at www.egyptiantheatre.comany.org. to continue their support as they have in the past because of budget cuts, Baxter said. "The commercial sponsorships have dropped considerably and that has been a challenge for the festival," he said "At this time, unfortunately, it has never been as hard for an independent feature filmmaker to make it into the mainstream. So I think that it's important that organizations like Slamdance and the Sundance Film Festival are there to provide a showcase that will give the filmmaker that increased opportunity of trying to make it, in the bigger sense, and get their films exposed to a general audience." On the flipside, Baxter and Slamdance has seen a rise in the quality of independent filmmaking. "It has never been so high," he said. "You can really see how the improvements that have been made over the last few years within the industry have boosted the quality and storytelling." That has to do a lot with technology, explained Baxter. "The development of technology for filmmakers in the last few years is nothing short of outstanding," he said. "Because what we're seeing right now are these great developments and inventions which are allowing the filmmakers to make higher quality films at a lower cost. We're seeing professional equipment at consumer prices. The advancements that have been made in filmmaking have been staggering in the past three to five years and are there now for everyone to enjoy, to use and experiment with." After 17 years, the Slamdance Film Festival is still run by the same person who still maintains the original goal - to offer a film festival for filmmakers by filmmakers. "We still program films by independent, emerging filmmakers," said co-founder Peter Baxter during a telephone interview with The Park Record from his office in Los Angeles, Calif. "The Slamdance Competition is still, to this day. made up of those films that were made by first-time feature filmmakers who don't have distribution, and who made them for a really low budget." This year there were more than 5,000 submissions for the 2011 festival, Baxter said. "Like we have done every year since 1994, we watch each film at least twice and give them all due consideration before they are chosen for the competition," he said. "In the end the votes are cast on whether or not a particular film is to be included in the festival. That hasn't changed and that keeps a level playing field, which is important for the group of filmmakers that are coming into their own. We do this because it's difficult for them to compete against wellknown directors." See page C-3 for a list of the Slamdance Film Festival competition films. Although it is important to maintain the integrity of Slamdance. this year the economy became a new puzzle to solve, That situation raises the "I think before we started bar for Slamdance, Baxter planning for this year's festival said. we were hit with the bad economy," Baxter said. "And that has impacted us in two different ways." The first is that companies that have been involved with film festivals and arts organizations have found it difficult PHOTO COURTESY SLAMDANCE Slamdance co-founder Peter Baxter said there were more than 5,000 films submitted for the competitons this year. "It's really important for a festival like Slamdance to not only present a good showcase that attracts media and industry attention for the filmmakers at the festival, but also, with so many distributors going out of business, provide a year round exhibition platform as well." During the 2010 Slamdance Film Festival, Baxter announced a partnership with Microsoft through the XBox and Zoom platforms. This year, Baxter will announce another program that will expose the films to larger audiences. "One of the prizes we have is a distribution prize for Best Short Film," he said. "That will give us an opportunity to book these films in theatres in 2011. And we'll make more announcements as the festival continues." The Slamdance Fihn Festival will take place at Jan 21-27, 2011, in Park City Utah. For more information.
