The 26-year-old Parkite put on a spectacular show Sunday in Beaver Creek, Colo., as he conquered the field in the Audi Birds of Prey giant slalom finishing .80 seconds ahead of the field. "I've never won this early in the season or on home surface," Ligety said Sunday at Beaver Creek. "To win in that kind of fashion in front of the home crowd is awesome. I've been close here a lot of years." After flying down the slopes in a first run that wowed the crowds, Ligety held a .36 lead over second place. Ligely said he had finished in the top four every time he had competed in the giant slalom at Beaver Creek since 2006, and was even in first place a few years back before taking his foot off the gas pedal. "I knew I couldn't let off," he said in reference to his eventual first triumph. I just took a lot of risk and it paid off." As friends, family and a large constituency from the Park City Ski Team cheered Ligety on, a friend who is no stranger to big wins and Olympic medals phoned in to give her fellow USST member a bit of encouragement. Between runs, Lindsey Vonn called Beaver Creek announcer Doug Lewis after winning the super G in Lake Louise, Alberta earlier on Sunday. GRAYSON WEST/PARK RECORD Please see Sports briefs, B-2 Please see Ligety, B-3 PCHS senior Bethany Kanten (No.1) carries a 4.4 grade-point average and is widely recognized as one of the top goalkeepers in the state over the last few years. When telling the story of how his daughter evolved into a bona fide soccer star, Steve Kanten always goes back to one particular memory. When Bethany Kanten was four years old, there was an impromptu soccer match for all the kids in her preschool class. Goal by goal, Bethany slowly began to show that she had some sort of special talent. By the end of the match, it was the entire class against Bethany. Bethany won, 5-0. "Almost every single boy ended up on the sideline crying afterward," Steve Kanten said, laughing. Kanten, now a senior at Park City High School, is heading to Harvard University next year to play for the Crimson. She has been widely recognized as one of the best goalkeepers in the state for the last few years. But Kanten is not only a star between the posts, she is all-universe in the classroom. She carries a 4.4 gradepoint average. "Academically, Park City does a good job preparing you for the next level," she said. "Going to Harvard, I know I'm not going to be the smartest person there." But she'll definitely be one of the smartest on the pitch. Born and raised in Park City, Bethany grew accustomed to achieving and accomplishing things. According to her father, the natural ability was always there and that only helped fuel her desire to get better at other things.
