Heartbreak and missed opportunities form crux of film By JAMA MCQUAY Record Guest Writer At the core of actor/filmmaker Miranda July's first feature exists a AMERJCANS cStnal link into the artist's past. ^*ARTS Her film, "Me and You and Everyone We Know," will screen at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, vying for recognition in the Dramatic Competition. July had been working on the film score and briefly stepped out of a recording studio just long presents enough to give a telephone interview to The Park Record. In broad terms, the filmmaker explained that the narrative of "Me and You and Everyone We Know" is about children and adults trying to connect with each other. "One of the main characters is a six-year-old boy, but there's something very familiar about him to me." An ensemble cast delivers multiple storylines in the festival screening, including Miranda July. The writer/director cast herself as an eccentric performance artist who meets a lonely shoe salesman. "It's funny," July says. "They sort of have an attraction/repulsion for one another." Like her role in the film, July actually is a performance artist and has produced such short flicks as Fri 1/14 8pm, Sat 1/15 8pm, "Ilaysha Royko," "The Amateurist," Sun 1/16 6pm "Nest of Tens," and "Getting Stronger Every Day." But she was scrutinizing it nonetheless, piecemeal, during the final stage of completion. 'Tin watching it every day as I score it,*1 she says. For so many filmmakers who arrive in January for the film festival, there is nothing like sitting among a packed theater viewing their own original works on the big screen for the first time. July also was ihc recipient of the Sundanee/NHK International Filmmaker's Award. Once the screenplay was solidified, it took five weeks to shoot the film in Los Angeles within a sixmonth post-production period. The feature was still being edited when July heard it had been selected lor Ihe Dramatic Competition. "You give them what you have when the deadline is there, and you hope it's good enough," said July. "We were floored... The news came at a lime when we "really needed a boost."
