Show The Park Record WecVThurs/Fri, January 12-14,2005 B-9 District offers Microsoft certification And scholarships are available for needy studentsfromDWS By JARED WH1TLEY Of the Record staff Park City Community Education is offering a class where students can become certified as a Microsoft Office Specialist, and there's grant money available so some students can take il for free. The class aims to certify students in the word-processing application Microsoft Word. Community education wanted U> offer the class "to help people that maybe are having trouble getting hired in administrative fields," according to spokeswoman Julia Jones. "Getting this certificate really gives them a notch up on gelling a job." Jones said. The class will cover a variety of. word-processing tasks, such as creating forms, working with graphics, using documents on the Internet, "and fun stuff like that," according to class instructor Cindy Wilcox, a Park City High School business and computer teacher who is on sabbatical this year. "I think its really important in the employment field for proving what skills you really do have," Wilcox said. "By saying you're Microsoft Office certified, an employer will know exactly what you're able to do." 'Hie class terminates with the certification test, which technically students could pass without actually attending the class, if they already have Ihe skills. "That's great, but (the class) is one of those helpful things to have in preparation for the certification test," Wilcox said. 'Hie $160 class will meet twice a week, for two months starting on Jan. IS. But qualifying candidates could receive a need-based scholarship from the Provo office of the Department of Workforce Services, Jones said. She recommends interested parties contact department employee Wendy Hughes at (801) 374-7220 or via email at whughes@utah.gov. "If there's a needy person and they can prove they're needy, that department could very likely come up with some grant money for them," Jones said. Held in the Park City High School computer lab, the class size can go as high as 24 students. Jones said, and if it's wellreceived, the district will repeat it next quarter. Wilcox is also interested in teaching advanced classes in Microsoft programs like Access. Excel. Power Point, and Outlook. "I'm hoping that if it really takes off that we'll be able In offer the other Microsoft specialist classes," Wilcox said. Community education classes are open to anyone.
