All these men grew up in the shadow of Ecker Hill, a national and international ski jumping venue that's : •"7 - V ' £ s now within the Pinehrook area. "John V." passed away at St. Alphonsus hospital in Boise. Idaho, due to complications of multiple myeloma. He lived his life with strength and purpose. He was born in Cedar City, Utah in 1935 to Philip and Clara Benson. He had many wonderful memories of growing up in the small lown of Parowan, Utah. He loved the people and appreciated the opportunities that were passed on to him by the people of Parowan. He became a well-known basketball player taking his high school team lo state for the first lime in 21 years. He accepted a full-ride scholarship to BYU and received many MVP awards. He was drafted to play pro ball... but he was also drafted inlo the army for the Korean War. He always believed it was better lo serve his country and did so honorably. He received his bachelors of science degree and started coaching. He started his own business. "Hie Trophy Hut," in Salt Lake City. His wife and children all participated and after nearly 25 years, it became "'Benson's Trophies and Plaques" and is currently owned and operated by one of his sons. Before a recent move to Idaho, John and Sue lived in Park Cily for over 20 years and made many long-lasting relationships. He loved and cared for so many people, especially the youth. He loved coaching the basketball team for Park City High and driving his bus full of children. John Benson He is survived by his wife Sue; five children: Jeannic Nee Icy. John Jr.. Craig. Cathy Myers. Brett: nine grandchildren; and sisters: Barbara Burl. Susan Nyman and Phyllis Peterson. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Neila and brothers. Nathan and Simon. A viewing will take place fv8 p.m. Wednesday. Jan. 12. al the Cannon Mortuary in Sail Lake at 2460 East Bengal Blvd. (7600 Soulh) and also on 'liuirsday. Jan. 13. 10 a.m. al ihe Park City Stake Center. 2300 Monitor Dr. where funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will take place at a graveside service Friday. Jan. 14. 11 a.m. al the Parowan Cemetery. 'Hie family has asked in lieu of flowers to please send donations to the American Cancer Society and American Diabetes Association.
