By PAUL BOBBINS Special to the Record It was one of the most emotional scenes in memory for the U.S. Freestyle Ski 'learn. A 1-23-4 sweep for the men's moguls team followed 24 hours later by a 1-2-3 podium sweep by the men's aerialisls, who spend the summer and early fall training in the splash pool at the Utah Olympic Park. The back-lo-back historic moments look place over the weekend at Monl Trcmblanl, a resort village in the Laurcntians about 90 minutes west of Montreal. The men's moguls crew has dominated the World. Cup scene for the last couple of seasons. Consider: 2002 - Olympic silver for Travis Mayer and the World Cup title lor Jeremy Bloom. 2003 - Gold and silv.er medals for Bloom plus double bronze for Toby Dawson at the World Championships at Deer Valley plus the World Cup crown for Travis Cabral. 2004 - No title but U.S. men finished 2-3-4-5-7-8 in the World Cup points and recorded seven World Cup victories among its total of \5 lop-three performances. So. perhaps Saturday's sweep with Dawson earning the sixth win of his career, followed by Bloom and Luke Wester!und (with Mayer fourth) wasn't loo shocking. But the U.S. aerialists took few prisoners Sunday as Ryan St. Onge - the kid with the choir boy kisser and the proverbial heart of an assassin when he steps into his skis on comp day harvested his first World Cup triumph with "Speedy" Peterson second and Joe Pack third. Nol only was it the first win by St. Onge but Peterson took over the World Cup points lead after three events. The freestyle World Cup moves on to Lake Placid, N.Y., this week with two aerials meets (Friday and Sunday) plus moguls action Saturday on the 1980 Olympic mountain, Whitefacc. "Maybe, that's the highlight of the weekend. Winning is great," St. Onge said, "but having these guys up here on the podium with me...yeah, that's the highlight." He conceded he even had dreamed the night before about his first World Cup victory although he didn't see any, much less two, teammates on the podium with him. "That's really special," he added. "We've grown accustomed to the moguls guys doing so well and the girls doing well, too - but the aerialisls have dropped a little off the radar because they haven't had great results, nothing to compare with the moguls team." said Head Coach Jeff Winlersteen. "So. it's just so nice to see them get rewarded for all the hard work they've put in...and, obviously, it's great for the coaches, loo." St. Onge's victory was the first by a U.S. man since Eric Bergoust (Missoula, MT) - who was 14th Sunday - won at Lake Placid in January 2002. Aerials Head Coach Malt Chrislensen led U.S. coaches as they charged down the landing slope lo embrace the aerialists in the outrun area. "By the time we got there, though, it was a mob scene. The girls, who had competed first, had stuck around lo step [help soflen] the landing hill for the guys and they were there with Bergy and a lot of other people," Chrislensen said. "'iliis was great for the guys, for sure, but it was great for the whole aerials team. They're all been so supportive of each other - working on their own technique and jumps, but helping each other any way they can." he said. He also was buoyant about the showing from Emily Cook, returning to the World Cup after three years of surgery, rehab and assorted other delays, and the performance by Lacy Schnoor, who made her World Cup debul and finished a stunning 10th. She had a strong first jump, which got her into the finals - the lop 10 from the first round of jumping make finals - bul then she had some problems with her second jump. Still, one World Cup, one top-10 works for anyone. "Lacy was a star. She had a great first jump and ihen she got a little cautious when she had a great lakeoff and gol way up there on her second jump," the coach explained. "Still, it was outstanding for someone in her first World Cup con lest. We wanted her lo get some experience and she went ritjht at it." Camerota starts on World Cup circuit his first World Cup lop-20. Camerota was 43rd and 34th in two events over the weekend in Sccfcld. Austria. "We're not looking for anything bul Eric getting internaBy PAUL ROBBINS tional experience," the team's Special to the Record new-lhis-scason jumping coach, Park City's Eric Camerota, Lasse Ottcscn. explained. Camerota, 19, moved up this month to the "real" World Cup, sometimes called World Cup-A, and was 20th last Thursday in Schonach, Germany, the midpoint of the three-event German Grand Prix. "My only concern was my cross-country skiing," he said by phone. "Would it be strong enough to compete at (he A level? "After the B Cup, I was doing pretty well...and now I feel I'm skiing at A Cup level, II gives me some confidence." Todd Lodwjck, who stands third in the world Cup poinls and has won six events in his career, has been high on Camerola for some time, "Eric's a perfect fit for this team." he said. "He's a hard worker, and the more lime he spends on 'A' is all the better for him. He could be the fourth guy we need for the relay...he's young, but he's going to keep improving." "Eric's a great addition. It's good for the team - we'll need four guys for the team event at Worlds [and the Olympics], and he's not intimidated with his first time on the World Cup," said Ottescn. "He's feeling more comfortable with the guys and is seeing he can ski at this level. "And with his positive approach to all of it," Ottesen said, "he's showing he belongs here. He just needs to keep building the experience." visit us at www.parkrecord.com TuBing Hills The S o l d i e r H o l l o w cubing hill is o p e n f o r t h e season. THIS INREALESEQE OPTIIONS PROVIDE FLEXIBILITY BY MICHAEL LAPAY The presence of an option in a real estate contract means the owner is giving the prospective purchaser the right to buy or lease the owner's property, at a fixed price within a set period of time. The purchaser usually pays a fee for this right and assumes no obligation to make any other payment until deciding to exercise the option, that is, to buy or lease the property, or to allow the option to expire. If the option is not exercised within the specified period of time, it is considered expired. The buyer cannot recover the consideration fee paid for the option. But the owner could agree to apply the fee to the purchase price of the property. © 580 MAIN STREET, PARK CITY VIRTUAL TOURS: WWW.PUREUTAH.COM E-MAIL: MUPAY@PLJREUTAH.COM Package Includes: Board, Boots and Bindings Package Includes: Board, Boots and Bindings Ordinal* Price Ski Bags Starting ai 19 &e tf«^ 435.640.5700 OFRCI!: 435.655.8600 MORROW or 5150 3-Piece Snowboard Package Better flotmce Extended Gtfecut and Raised Tal Frwides if Turning ,_„ MICHAEL LAPAY MOBILE ATLANTIS 3-Piece Snowboard Package Prudential Utah Real Estate PARK CITY FULL SELECTION 1780 Park Ave- The Choice (Holiday Village Mall) \ 435-o49-6922 Shop Onllno & www.gartsports.com |
