Show Economic picture positive On the whole, Davis County has fared well during the first quarter of 1991 according to Utah's Wasatch Front North District, a labor market information report. During the first quarter, the county reported the following: The number of non-agricultural jobs increased by 2,900 from first quarter 1990, bringing the total number of non-farm jobs to 59,930. The top two job-growth industries were services and trade with 1,370 and 900 new jobs, respectively. In services, 100 or more new jobs were created by employment, miscellaneous, health, and engineering services. In retail trade, grocery store employment grew significantly with over 800 new jobs. Other significant job gains come in the retail trade industries of eating establishments and catalog or mailorder mail-order establishments. The value of permit-authorized construction increased in-creased by 28.5 percent to stand at $3 1.8 million. Two-thirds of the total construction came in new residential construction with 201 units added in the first quarter of 1991. Most of these new homes were in Bountiful (27), Centerville (20), Farmington (12), Kaysvilie (22), and Layton (74). In new non-residential construction, three office buildings ($3 million) and ten stores ($4.5 million) accounted ac-counted for 75 percent of the total dollars allocated for non-residential construction. Other large projects included two publicly-owned buildings ($638,900) and one amusement building ($247,700). Third quarter 1990 Davis County gross taxable retail sales and purchases were up 2.8 percent from a year earlier to total $289.9 million. The largest increase in sales came from food stores at $14.1 million. City data indicates that Bountiful was the only city to report sales gains of $10 million or more. The $12.9 million in new sales in Bountiful was concentrated con-centrated in food stores, up $5.3 million, car dealers, up $2.7 million, and miscellaneous retail sales, up $1.3 million. Sunset posted the second largest gain at $6.4 million, but with no sales data available the exact reason for the increase cannot be determined. Layton reported the largest loss in quarterly sales going go-ing from $82.3 million in third quarter 1989 to $75.1 million in third quarter 1990. |
