Show New bass record for Powell LAKE POWELL David Clayton of Casa Grande, Ariz., caught a new record striped bass last month. The big fish weighed in at 41 pounds, 10 ounces, and was 44 Vi inches long. Clayton caught the fish on a deep-diving rebel minnow in 25 feet of water while trolling near the Navajo Power Plant intake in the main channel. DWR Lake Powell Project Leader Wayne Gustaveson says evening even-ing near dusk is the best time to fish. "Locate fish by trolling shad imitating lures across long, prominent points in the main channel," said Gustaveson. "When a fish is hooked, stop and cast to the striper school until the fish move on. Then troll until the school is relocated." Gustaveson thinks the striper fishing should continue to be good through much of June, since the fish got a late start spawning this spring.
