Show Eradication continues BOUNTIFUL The gypsy moth eradication program continued in Davis County. Treatment continued on 1,551 acres in Parrish Creek, north nor-th of the B " in Bountiful, Wednesday. Treatment began at approximately 5:30 a.m., and only a small portion of the treatment was conducted over residential residen-tial areas. Application of the treatment was conducted in three applications ap-plications by helicopter, with two aerial observation helicopters. The copters sprayed bacillus thuringiensis at a rate of 12 gallon per acre by low flying helicopter. Because of the small amount of spray, weather conditions needed to be as close to perfect as possible, which meant low temperatures, high humidity and little or no wind. It also required at least two to three hours of no precipitation following the application. 'Bacillus thuringiensis (abbreviated B.t.) is a biological 1 materia which occurs naturally in the soil and is specific against moths and butterflies in their caterpillar stage. It does not adversely affect birds, other insects or people according ac-cording to a spokesperson for the Utah Gypsy Moth Eradication Program. As of June 13, trie program has treated a total of 42,254 acres throughout Utah which is 47 percent of the total 89,775 acres. |
