Show Region 1 's state girls' title hopes dashed Wednesday MOUNTAIN VIEW 68, WEBER 54 While Viewmont's Lady Vikings were watching the Brighton Bengals shred their state championship dreams, so too, were the rest of Region l's entrants in the 1991 girls' basketball state tournament as each fell to various second round foes. At Pleasant View, and in front of their home-crowd fans, region champion Weber watched helplessly as Mountain View dashed their hopes of a state title on the rocks of reality. Mountain View snapped the Warriors 12 -game winning streak with a 68-54 win Wednesday night. The Bruins Kim Henry went unchecked after Weber's Jodi McKay was benched by fouls. Henry logged 32 points with no one to stop her in the lane and single-handedly boosted Mountain View past the Warriors. Leading Weber were Marvett Dickamore and Bridgette Owenes with 1 4 and 1 1 , respectively. Mountain View led by a single point after the first eight minutes of play, 11-10 but out scored the Warriors 15-9 in the second quarter to carry a 26-19 lead into the locker room at halftime. In the third, however, both teams set a blistering pace, but Weber fell further behind trailing 44-38 going into the fourth. BINGHAM 53, ROY 37 Meanwhile, Roy floundered against Skyline losing 53-37 in Wednesday night's second-round consolation match after losing by 33 to Bingham the night before. Wednesday's loss brought a quick end to the Royals post-season playoff performance. Roy remained within striking distance for three quarters but unforced un-forced errors let Skyline creep to a 20-point lead midway through the fourth. Roy's Annette Hill led the Royals with 12 points. Roy trailed by a slim four-point margin after the first 12-8 but fell to an eight-point deficit as both teams logged 12 and eight points, respectively in the second. Roy scored 8 to Skyline's 10 in the third trailing 34-24 when four I quarter play began. I OREM 68, BONNEVILLE 56 Finally, the Bonneville Lakers fell victim to the Orem High Tigers in Orem 68-56 meaning no one from Region 1 remains in the race for I a state championship. f The Tigers pounced on Bonneville early and never looked back. Trailing 18-4 after a turnover-plagued first period performance, the Lakers ourscored the Tigers 17-15 in the second. At the half, Bonneville trailed 35-19. The Lakers matched Orem point for point during the second half with both logging 13 in the third and 22 in the fourth, but Bonneville couldn't regain the ground it had lost in the opening minutes. Suzy Hassell led the Lakers with 17 followed by Kristen Stephenson Stephen-son who logged 15. |
