Show VHS presents "The Kind and I" One of Rodgers and Hammers-tein's Hammers-tein's most well-known and well-loved well-loved musicals, "The King and I," will be presented as this year's production pro-duction at Viewmont High School. The VHS Musical Theatre Company, Com-pany, under the direction of Jeanne McGuire for the past nine seasons, has produced such hits as "Fiddler on the Roof," "West Side Story," "The Sound of Music" and last year's sellout, "42nd Street." For the past three seasons, tickets have been sold on a reserved seat arrangement, which allows patrons to call in advance for reservations and their choice of best seats. "The King and I" is based on the true story of a young English widow named Anna Leon o wens, who went to Siam in 1862 to serve as teacher to the children of the king. The musical tells of many of the experiences and surprises which Anna, played by Meghan Dover, and her young son Louis, played by Matthew Rodgers, encounter as they try to learn about a culture very different from their own. The King (Clint Payne) has many wives and many children and cannot understand the concept of anyone who would choose to have one wife only. Anna's attempt to explain it to him results in one of the play's most famous scenes in which she sings "Shall We Dance." There is a great conflict over this issue because Tuptim (Heidi Ferrin), one of the girls who "belongs" to the king, wishes to marry the man she really loves, LunTha (Ammon Jones). Anna's influence on the king and the impact of her teaching on the crown prince eventually changed the way Siam was governed as it took its place among the modem nations of the world. Some of the familiar music in the show includes "Getting to Know You," "Hello Young Lovers," "Something Wonderful' and "Whistle a Happy Tune." One of the play's most unique scenes is an Oriental version of "'Uncle Tom's Cabin" called "The Small House of Uncle Thomas." Principal cast members are Kristy Young as Lady Thiang, Spencer Morgan as the Kralahome, and Quinn Schiffman as Prince Chululongkom. The cast includes 80 performers who play the wives, children, palace guards and many other characters. Many actors play more than one role. Performances will begin Wednesday, March 13, and will run through March 16. Curtain time for all shows is 7:30 p.m. Advance sale ticket prices are $4 for adults and $3 for students. All tickets at the door will be $5. Reservations can be made by calling 299-2065 during school hours, or tickets may be purchased pur-chased in the Viewmont business office from 2 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. on weekdays. i " J 1 j J !
